Renovating Laundries in Canterbury Homes

Many of Canterbury’s Federation and interwar homes had an outdoor washhouse or a laundry in a rear lean-to, which later owners enclosed or tucked into a back passage. In homes with large modern extensions, the laundry often ended up in a small, windowless room off the kitchen, while townhouses and apartments near Canterbury Road usually have cupboard laundries.

Laundry projects here usually involve reconfiguring the back of the house so the laundry sits beside the kitchen or mudroom, building tall cabinetry with hanging space and a drying cupboard, adding a second trough for gardening and pets, and fitting proper ventilation. Most laundry work doesn’t need a planning permit from the City of Boroondara, and licensed trades handle every service change with compliance certificates.

Before You Start

Planning a Laundry Renovation in Canterbury

  1. Ventilation

    Windowless Laundries

A laundry in an internal room off a Canterbury kitchen often has no window, so moisture from the dryer and wet washing hangs around. A ducted exhaust fan to the outside, a heat pump dryer and a louvred or undercut door help. Where the room sits under the flat roof of an extension, we check the duct route through the roof.

  2. Plumbing

A Second Trough for Garden and Pets

Canterbury’s large gardens bring muddy boots, garden tools and pets inside. A second trough or a deep utility sink near the back door, with a hand shower, keeps that mess away from the kitchen. Our licensed plumbers plan the drainage so both troughs connect properly and provide a plumbing compliance certificate.

  3. Layout

    Grouping the Service Rooms

In bigger Canterbury homes, placing the laundry next to a butler’s pantry or scullery groups the service areas and keeps plumbing together. A single door to the side path can serve both rooms. This works well when a rear extension reorganises the back of the house and the old kitchen space is freed up.

  4. Energy

    Drying Indoors

A heated drying cabinet or a ceiling-mounted airer lets clothes dry inside a Canterbury home on wet winter days without the dryer running for hours. A full-height drying cabinet can sit beside the washer in a large laundry. It needs its own circuit and a vent route outside, which we plan together with the cabinetry.

  5. Storage

The Old Washhouse Out the Back

If a Canterbury property still has an old brick washhouse, it may be reused as a garden store, workshop or studio once the laundry moves inside. In a heritage precinct, external changes to an outbuilding may need a planning permit, and old roofing or linings may need asbestos testing. We assess its condition before suggesting reuse.

FAQ

Laundry Renovations Canterbury: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Where should the laundry go in our Canterbury renovation?

Usually near the back or side door, close to the clothesline and the kitchen, so washing, gardening and pets can be handled in one place. If a rear extension is planned, the laundry can sit beside a scullery or mudroom. We draw the options on your floor plan before design is finalised.

Does a laundry renovation need council approval in Canterbury?

Internal laundry work generally doesn’t need a planning permit from the City of Boroondara. Work on an outbuilding, a new external door or vents visible from the street in a heritage precinct, or structural changes, may need approvals. Licensed plumbers and electricians do the service work and supply compliance certificates.

Can our Canterbury townhouse laundry cupboard be improved?

Yes. Stacking the machines, adding a slim trough with a mixer tap, running shelves to the ceiling and fitting a door that opens fully make a European laundry far more useful. A safe tray connected to the drain helps protect timber or carpeted floors. In a townhouse with an owners corporation, plumbing changes may need its approval.

Before we list our Canterbury house, should the laundry be updated?

A dated laundry rarely puts buyers off on its own, but a damp or cluttered one can. Fixing leaks, replacing a worn trough and cabinet, adding shelving and making sure the room is ventilated present it well. Moving the laundry or adding a mudroom is a bigger change that is usually planned as part of a wider renovation rather than a pre-sale job.
