Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Aberfeldie Homes
Bathrooms in Aberfeldie’s bungalows and postwar homes are often original or only lightly updated: a single bathroom with a separate toilet, coloured tiles, a shower over the bath and a small window. Many family homes still get by with that one room, while the newer rebuilds towards the river have ensuites and powder rooms built in from the start.
Popular projects are replacing a tired family bathroom with a walk-in shower and freestanding bath, adding an ensuite to the main bedroom, re-waterproofing over timber floors and folding a separate toilet into the bathroom where it gains useful space. Internal bathroom work generally doesn’t need a planning permit from the City of Moonee Valley, and our licensed trades provide compliance certificates.

Before You Start
Planning a Bathroom Renovation in Aberfeldie
Floors
Tiling Over Timber Floors
Bungalows in Aberfeldie mostly have suspended timber floors, which move slightly with the seasons and under load. A tiled bathroom on timber needs stiff framing, a compressed fibre cement or similar substrate and flexible waterproofing to the Australian Standard. Where old leaks have damaged joists, we replace them before the new floor is laid.
Design
Period Character Inside
In an Aberfeldie bungalow, details such as a small mosaic or hexagonal floor tile, subway wall tiles, a console basin and traditional tapware can suit the house while everything behind the walls is new. Heritage controls mostly cover the exterior, so the choice is yours. We help balance period style with modern storage and lighting.
Layout
Ensuite in an Upstairs Addition
Many Aberfeldie extensions add a main bedroom and ensuite upstairs. Placing the ensuite above the downstairs bathroom or kitchen keeps drainage runs short, and the upper floor needs waterproofing and sound insulation suited to a timber framed floor. We fix the bathroom position early, together with the stair and the rest of the addition.
Plumbing
Old Pipes and Drains
Older Aberfeldie homes may still have galvanised water pipes and clay drains, which roots from established garden trees can block over time. We check the condition of pipes and drains while the bathroom is opened up and replace sections that are failing. Our licensed plumbers issue a compliance certificate when the work is complete.
Ventilation
Small Windows and Damp
Bathrooms in interwar homes often have a small high window and no exhaust fan, so condensation lingers on walls and ceilings. A ducted fan vented outside, a skylight for daylight and a heated towel rail keep the room dry. Where the bathroom faces the street in a heritage precinct, we keep the existing window and ventilate from inside.

Do I need heritage approval to renovate a bathroom in Aberfeldie?
Generally not for work inside the house, as Moonee Valley’s heritage controls mostly apply to external changes. A new window, a roof vent visible from the street or an extension containing the bathroom may need a planning permit if your property is in a Heritage Overlay. We check your property report before work starts.
Can a second bathroom be added to our Aberfeldie bungalow?
Often, by converting a small bedroom or sunroom, or as part of a rear extension. A suspended timber floor makes it easier to run new drainage underneath to the sewer. If the house has only one bathroom, a second one or a powder room near the living areas makes a big difference for a family. We check the drainage path first.
How long will an Aberfeldie bathroom take?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks from strip-out to handover. In an older Aberfeldie home, replacing damaged floor framing or old pipes can add time, and ordering tiles and fittings early keeps the program steady. We give you a written schedule before work begins so you can plan around it.
Should we choose a freestanding bath?
A freestanding bath suits the proportions of many Aberfeldie bungalow bathrooms and becomes a focal point. It needs enough space around it for cleaning, and on a timber floor the joists must be checked for the weight of a full bath and the person in it. A built-in bath with a tiled hob is better where space is tight.
Is it worth updating our Aberfeldie bathroom before we sell?
In a period home, some buyers are happy to renovate themselves, but a leaking shower or damp floor can raise concerns in a building inspection. Fixing leaks, regrouting, replacing a cracked vanity and fitting an exhaust fan are sensible steps. Keeping original features such as early tiles in good condition can suit an Aberfeldie bungalow better than replacing them.
