Kitchen and outdoor renovations
“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”
Outstanding Customer Service
“Absolute pleasure dealing with Tony and his team. His customer service was without a doubt, outstanding! Punctual, always on time, workmanship could not be faulted. He delivered on what he promised and on time. We would not hesitate recommending his services!”
Outdoor Living in Coburg Homes
Coburg’s blocks tend to be wider and deeper than those closer to the city, so many homes have proper backyards with fruit trees, sheds and garden beds, especially behind the bungalows and post-war weatherboards. Newer townhouses have smaller courtyards. Older homes often have a back door well above ground level, with steep concrete steps down to the yard.
That shapes most Coburg outdoor projects: replacing steep back steps with a deck level to the living area, building covered alfresco areas for year-round use, adding pergolas with shade and lighting, and designing small decks and screening for townhouse courtyards. Decks and roofed structures often need a building permit, and parts of Coburg have heritage controls, so we confirm requirements with Merri-bek City Council first.

Planning Outdoor Space in Coburg

Replacing Steep Back Steps
Many Coburg bungalows and post-war homes have a back door well above the yard, reached by narrow concrete steps. A deck level with the floor makes the backyard part of the house, but at that height it generally needs a building permit and a balustrade where the fall is more than one metre. Wide steps down to the lawn finish it off.
Trees
Fruit Trees and Vegetable Gardens
Coburg backyards often hold decades-old lemon, fig and olive trees and well-used vegetable beds. A deck can be shaped around them rather than replacing them. Large mature trees may need a Tree Works Permit from Merri-bek before removal or heavy pruning, and footings are placed to avoid major roots.
Soil
Deck Footings in Clay
Much of Coburg’s ground is reactive clay that moves between wet winters and dry summers. Deck footings need to go deep enough to reach stable ground, and a deck attached to the house should allow for slight movement between the two. Getting this right stops boards from twisting and the deck from pulling away from the wall.
Permits
Alfresco Roofs Near Boundaries
A covered alfresco area attached to the back of the house generally needs a building permit, and structures close to a side boundary have height and length limits. On Coburg’s wider blocks there is usually room to fit a generous roof, but we check siting early so the design doesn’t need to change once permits are applied for.
Privacy
Townhouse Courtyards
Coburg’s newer townhouses often have a small courtyard closely overlooked by neighbours. A low deck, a privacy screen and a pergola with a retractable or louvred cover can turn it into a usable outdoor room. Where the courtyard is common property or covered by owners corporation rules, approval comes first.

Do I need a permit for a pergola in Coburg?
A freestanding pergola without a roof often doesn’t need a building permit if it meets size and siting limits, but a roofed pergola attached to the house generally does. In Coburg’s heritage precincts, anything visible from the street may also need a planning permit. We check the rules for your property and apply for permits where needed.
My back door is high above the yard. What are the options?
In Coburg bungalows the usual options are a deck at floor level with wide steps down to the garden, or a smaller landing with a deck lower down. A deck at floor height is easier to use every day but generally needs a building permit and a balustrade. We look at the height and your yard at the first visit.
Can a deck be built around an established fruit tree?
Yes. The deck can be framed around the trunk with a gap that allows for growth, and footings are positioned to avoid the main roots. Older fruit trees in Coburg backyards are often worth keeping for shade. If the tree is large enough to be protected by Merri-bek’s tree rules, we check first.
What decking timber works in a Coburg backyard?
Hardwoods such as spotted gum and merbau suit open, sunny Coburg backyards and weather to a soft grey if left unoiled. Treated pine is cheaper but needs more upkeep. Composite boards resist fading and need little maintenance. We’ll recommend options based on your yard’s sun, shade and how you’ll use the deck.
Should I build a new deck before I sell my Coburg house?
Many Coburg homes sit on generous backyards with established gardens and fruit trees, which buyers often value. A rotting or unsafe old deck is worth repairing or replacing, because it is easy for an inspector to spot. A brand new large deck is less essential: clean paving, a simple low deck off the living area and a tidy garden often present the yard well. Decks attached to the house generally need a building permit, which adds time.
