Kitchen and outdoor renovations

“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Renovating Kitchens in Croydon Homes

Croydon sits at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges, with streets of 1960s and 70s brick veneer homes, older weatherboards near Main Street and a growing number of units and townhouses. Many blocks are sloping and well treed. Original kitchens tend to be enclosed, with dark timber cabinets and a separate dining room, often facing away from the backyard or the hills.

That shapes how we approach kitchens in Croydon: opening up enclosed kitchens to the family and dining areas, adding an island and walk-in pantry, replacing dark timber with lighter finishes and better lighting, and reorienting the kitchen toward the garden or views. Most interior kitchen work doesn’t need a planning permit from Maroondah City Council, though structural changes need a building permit, which we organise.

Before You Start

Before You Renovate a Kitchen in Croydon

  1. Layout

Turning Toward the Garden or the Hills

Many Croydon kitchens were built facing the street or a side fence, with the best outlook to the backyard or the Dandenongs going to a bedroom. Moving the kitchen, or opening it to the rear living area, can change how the whole house feels. We look at sun, views and plumbing runs together before suggesting a layout.

  2. Light

    Dark Timber and Low Light

Original 1970s kitchens often have dark stained timber cabinets and a single ceiling light. On treed Croydon blocks, the room can feel dim even during the day. Lighter joinery, a pale benchtop, LED strip lighting under cabinets and a bigger window or skylight can make a noticeable difference without changing the footprint.

  3. Structure

Removing Walls in Brick Veneer Homes

Opening the kitchen to the dining or family room usually means removing an internal wall, and in many brick veneer homes that wall carries roof load. A beam can replace it, but a building permit is generally needed. We check the structure at your property and include the permit and engineering in your fixed-price quote.

  4. Slope

    Steps Between Rooms

Split-level homes are common on Croydon’s slopes, and the kitchen is often a few steps above or below the family room. Opening the two up can create a great connection, but stairs, balustrades and floor finishes need planning. We design around level changes so the space works safely for everyone in the house.

  5. Electrical

    Gas, Induction and Switchboards

Many Croydon homes were built with gas cooking and a small switchboard. Moving to induction, adding a wall oven or a second dishwasher may need new circuits or a switchboard upgrade. Our licensed electricians and plumbers handle the work, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety and a plumbing compliance certificate.

FAQ

Kitchen Renovations Croydon: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Can we turn our Croydon kitchen to face the backyard or the view?

Often, yes. Moving a kitchen is mostly about plumbing, drainage and power, which can usually be relocated in a brick veneer home on a slab or timber floor. On sloping blocks the rear of the house may be well above the ground, so we also look at windows, doors and any deck connection when planning the new layout.

Do I need a building permit to open up my kitchen?

If the wall you want to remove is load-bearing, a building permit is generally needed, along with an engineered beam. Non-structural walls can often be removed without one. Planning permits from Maroondah City Council are rarely needed for internal kitchen work. We confirm which permits apply before work starts.

Can we still cook while the kitchen is being renovated?

Most families set up a temporary kitchen in the laundry or dining room with a microwave, kettle and portable cooktop. We close off the work area, keep dust under control and clean up each day. Water and power are only off for short periods, and we let you know in advance.

We live in a Croydon townhouse. Is a kitchen renovation more complicated?

A little. If there is an owners corporation, you may need approval before work starts, and there may be rules about work hours, parking and rubbish. We coordinate with the owners corporation, plan deliveries around shared driveways and keep noise to permitted times.

Does a Croydon kitchen need updating before the house goes on the market?

In Croydon’s 1960s and 70s brick veneer homes, the original kitchen is often a closed galley with laminate benches, overhead cupboards and little connection to the backyard. Buyers looking in the outer east are often families who want room to cook while keeping an eye on the kids. Opening up the space, adding bench length and storage, and replacing worn surfaces tend to matter most. Leave premium appliances and custom joinery for the next owner to choose.
