Kitchen and outdoor renovations

“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Renovating Kitchens in Notting Hill Homes

Notting Hill is a small suburb between Mount Waverley and Clayton North, close to Monash University, with homes centred on the AV Jennings Westerfield Estate of the late 1950s and later brick houses, units and townhouses. Kitchens in the original homes are usually closed or semi-open, with laminate benches, overhead cupboards and a meals area beside them, and some have never been updated.

Common kitchen projects here include removing a wall or bulkhead to open the kitchen to the family room, replacing laminate and dated cabinetry, improving storage with deep drawers and a pantry, and making better use of sliding doors to the backyard. Most interior kitchen work doesn’t need a planning permit from the City of Monash, and our licensed trades handle the electrical and plumbing compliance.

What to Plan For in a Notting Hill Kitchen

  1. Design

    Bulkheads Above the Cupboards

Many Notting Hill kitchens from the 1960s and 1970s have a bulkhead above the overhead cupboards. Removing it may reveal rangehood ducting, plumbing or wiring that needs rerouting before cabinetry can go to the ceiling. We check the ceiling space early so the design for full-height cupboards or open shelving is realistic.

  2. Layout

    Working With the Estate Plan

The Westerfield Estate was planned around courts and pathways rather than through roads, and its houses sit on regular suburban blocks. Within that pattern the kitchen position varies from house to house. We look at orientation, the meals area and the path to the backyard before suggesting whether to open up, extend or keep the footprint.

  3. Materials

    Durable Rental Kitchens

Notting Hill homes let to students and staff from Monash University see heavy kitchen use. Moisture-resistant cabinet boxes, a hard-wearing benchtop, solid hinges and a cooktop with simple controls reduce wear and repair calls. We suggest finishes that stand up to shared use and can be fixed easily between tenancies.

  4. Electrical

    Wiring for Modern Appliances

Older Notting Hill kitchens may have only a few power points and an original switchboard. Induction cooktops, dishwashers and wall ovens need dedicated circuits and safety switches, and benches need more outlets than they did decades ago. Our licensed electricians upgrade the circuits as needed and issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

  5. Outdoor

    Sliding Doors to the Garden

Many Notting Hill homes already have sliding doors from the family room to the backyard. Positioning the kitchen near them makes serving outside easy and brings in light. If you want a wider opening, a new lintel and possibly a building permit are needed. We design the kitchen and the openings together.

FAQ

Kitchen Renovations Notting Hill: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Can I remove the wall between my Notting Hill kitchen and family room?

Often. In many Notting Hill brick veneer homes the internal walls carry ceiling loads, and some also support the roof. An engineer specifies any beam needed, and a building permit may be required for the structural work. We check the roof framing before designing an open plan kitchen, so you know what is possible.

How long will a Notting Hill kitchen renovation take?

The kitchen is out of use from strip-out until the benchtops are installed and the appliances connected. Removing a wall, rewiring or moving plumbing extends that period. We give you a written schedule and plan the order of trades so the room is out of action for as short a time as practical.

Is refacing enough for my Notting Hill kitchen?

If the cabinet boxes are sound and the layout works, new doors, benchtops and handles can update an older Notting Hill kitchen without a full rebuild. If the cabinets are swollen from leaks, sagging or awkward to use, replacing the cabinetry is usually the better choice. We inspect the kitchen and explain both options.

What does a Notting Hill rental kitchen need under Victorian rules?

Rental homes in Victoria must have a kitchen with a dedicated cooking and food preparation area, a sink with hot and cold water and a stovetop with at least two burners. Many Notting Hill rentals near Monash University already meet that but have worn benchtops, loose cupboard doors and poor lighting. Fixing those, and checking the rangehood works, usually matters more than a full redesign.
