Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Balwyn Homes
Balwyn’s Californian bungalows and other interwar homes typically have a single bathroom and separate toilet off the hallway, often renovated once or twice, while postwar houses may still have an original bathroom with coloured tiles. Larger newer homes have ensuites and powder rooms, but many older family houses still lack a proper main suite.
That shapes how we approach bathrooms in Balwyn: full renovations of family bathrooms with waterproofing to the Australian Standard, adding an ensuite and walk-in robe to the main bedroom, creating powder rooms near the living areas, and fitting heated floors and towel rails. Internal bathroom work generally doesn’t need a planning permit from the City of Boroondara, and licensed trades complete all plumbing and electrical work.

Before You Start
What to Plan For in a Balwyn Bathroom
Layout
Bathrooms Off the Central Hallway
Interwar homes in Balwyn were often built from pattern-book designs, with bedrooms and a modest bathroom arranged along a central hallway. Space is limited, so we look at combining the bathroom and toilet, borrowing a little from a linen cupboard, or using a sliding door. A small change to the walls can make room for a walk-in shower.
Drainage
An Ensuite From a Spare Room
Many Balwyn bungalows have three bedrooms and one bathroom. Turning part of a bedroom or a sleepout into an ensuite and robe is a common way to create a main suite without extending. The key questions are drainage from that side of the house and how the new room fits with the original layout, which we check at your property.
Materials
Interwar and Postwar Details
Some Balwyn bathrooms still have original 1930s wall tiles, a cast iron bath or a small leadlight window. You may want to keep or echo these, or replace them entirely. We talk through tiles, tapware and lighting that suit the age of your home, whether it is an interwar bungalow or a 1950s brick house.
Heritage
Windows in Heritage Areas
Parts of Balwyn are in a Heritage Overlay, including the Reid Estate precinct north of Whitehorse Road and individually listed houses. Work inside the bathroom usually doesn’t need a planning permit, but a new or enlarged window, especially one visible from the street, may. We check the controls for your address before finalising the design.
Heating
Comfort in Brick Homes
Solid and double brick interwar homes can be cool inside through winter, and older bathrooms often have no heating at all. Electric underfloor heating, a heated towel rail and a ducted exhaust fan make a big difference. We plan power and switching for these at the design stage so the finished room is comfortable all year.

My Balwyn home is in a heritage precinct. Can I renovate the bathroom?
Yes. Heritage Overlays mostly control external changes, so internal work such as a new bathroom generally doesn’t need a planning permit. If the renovation changes the outside of the house, such as a new window, skylight or vent visible from the street, a permit from the City of Boroondara may be needed. We check this before work starts.
Can you add an ensuite to a Balwyn bungalow?
Often, yes. The usual options are converting part of a large bedroom, using an old sleepout or sunroom, or including the ensuite in a rear extension. Drainage is the deciding factor, so we look at where the existing pipes run and how the new room can connect at the first visit.
Can a new bathroom suit an interwar home?
Yes. Subway or small-format tiles, a period-style basin, cross-handle tapware and black and white floor patterns all suit 1920s and 1930s houses, while the waterproofing and plumbing behind them are completely new. If your home has art deco touches, we can draw on those as well.
How long does a bathroom renovation take in Balwyn?
Most bathroom renovations take 2 to 4 weeks. Older Balwyn homes can take a little longer if we find old galvanised pipes, soft floor timbers or asbestos sheeting in a postwar bathroom. We tell you as soon as we find anything and keep the work area contained and cleaned up each day.
What should I fix in a Balwyn bathroom before putting the house up for lease?
In Balwyn’s Californian bungalows and postwar brick homes, a single original bathroom often has cracked tiles, a leaking shower recess or an old wall heater. For a lease, fixing the waterproofing, ventilation and hot water reliability comes first, followed by safe flooring and tapware that works properly. Keep the existing layout to limit plumbing work. Adding an ensuite is a bigger project that generally suits owners planning to stay rather than prepare for tenants.
