Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Deepdene Homes
Deepdene became a suburb in its own right in 2008, having long been part of south-west Balwyn, and it is known for interwar brick bungalows on leafy streets beside Burke Road and the Outer Circle Trail. Bathrooms in these homes are usually the single original room off the hall, with small tiles, a high window and timber floors, or a later update that has dated.
Bathroom projects here usually involve rebuilding original bathrooms with sound subfloors and waterproofing, creating ensuites from spare bedrooms or within extensions, choosing tiles and fittings that suit an interwar home, and adding heating and ventilation. Interior work doesn’t usually need a planning permit, but parts of Deepdene have heritage controls, so we confirm any external changes with the City of Boroondara.

Before You Start
What to Plan For in a Deepdene Bathroom
Waterproofing
Leaks in Old Bungalow Bathrooms
Interwar brick bungalows in Deepdene usually have a timber floor on piers under the bathroom. Older bathrooms often relied on cement render and tiles with no membrane, and leaks show up as stained skirtings next door or damp in the subfloor. We strip back to sound framing, repair the floor and waterproof to the Australian Standard.
Layout
Finding Room for an Ensuite
Deepdene bungalows usually have two or three bedrooms off a central hall and one bathroom. An ensuite can come from part of a large front bedroom, an enclosed sunroom or a new rear addition. Each option affects plumbing runs to the sewer differently, so we compare the layouts on your floor plan before design starts.
Design
Tiles That Suit the 1920s and 1930s
Bathrooms from the 1920s and 1930s often had cream, green or black and white tiles with a feature band. Echoing that palette with modern tiles, or keeping an original detail such as a recessed shelf or a leadlight window, helps the new room suit a Deepdene bungalow. We bring samples so you can see them in the room’s own light.
Ventilation
Airflow Under the Floor
Bungalows sit on piers with vents in the brick walls, and some Deepdene homes have vents blocked by later paving or garden beds. Poor airflow under a wet room speeds up rot. While the floor is open we check the subfloor, clear vents where possible and duct the new exhaust fan outside rather than into the roof space.
Asbestos
Linings From Mid-Century Updates
Bathroom updates in Deepdene from the 1950s to the 1980s sometimes used fibre cement wall sheets or vinyl floor tiles that may contain asbestos. Samples are tested before anything is pulled out, and where larger amounts are found, a licensed removalist takes them away. This is scheduled in from the start, so the job doesn’t stop once the room is opened up.

Is my Deepdene bathroom affected by a heritage overlay?
Probably not for interior work. Deepdene has some heritage-listed places and small precincts, such as the Angle Road precinct, and heritage controls mostly cover external changes. A new window or external ducting on a protected house may need a planning permit from the City of Boroondara. We check your address before work starts.
Can we add a second bathroom to our Deepdene bungalow?
Usually, yes. Common options are an ensuite in part of a large bedroom, a powder room near the back door or a second bathroom in a rear extension. The falls to the sewer connection decide what works, along with how the bedrooms are arranged. We compare the options on your floor plan before you commit to one.
How long will a bathroom renovation take in Deepdene?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. In older Deepdene homes, extra time may be needed if the floor framing has rotted, if asbestos needs removal or if a new ensuite needs new drainage under the house. We inspect first, so the written schedule reflects your bathroom rather than a generic one.
What bathroom work makes sense before we sell in Deepdene?
Buyers inspecting a Deepdene bungalow look for a bathroom that is clean, dry and working well. Fixing leaks and loose tiles, regrouting, replacing tired tapware and improving ventilation present the room well. If the bathroom is original and in good condition, its character can appeal on its own. A full rebuild suits owners who have time before listing or are staying.
