Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom

“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful

“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”

Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”

Renovating Bathrooms in Camberwell Homes

Camberwell’s Federation, Edwardian and interwar homes were built with one modest bathroom, often renovated once in the 1980s or 90s and now showing its age. Many still have timber floors under the tiles, small windows and a separate toilet off the hall, while larger family homes usually need a proper ensuite added. Apartments near Burke Road and Camberwell Junction have compact bathrooms with limited room to move plumbing.

In practice that means replacing timber subfloors or upgrading the framing so waterproofing will last, creating ensuites from spare bedrooms or rear extensions, fitting heated towel rails and good ventilation, and choosing tiles and fittings that suit period homes. Interior bathroom work rarely needs a planning permit, but large parts of Camberwell sit in Heritage Overlays, so we check any external changes with the City of Boroondara, and work with owners corporations in apartments.

Before You Start

Before Renovating a Bathroom in Camberwell

  1. Design

    Original Interwar Tiling

Some Camberwell bungalows built in the 1920s and 1930s still have their original tiled bathrooms, with coloured borders or small hexagonal floor tiles. If you want to keep that character, a new bathroom can reuse the period palette with modern waterproofing underneath. If not, the old mortar bed is often thick and heavy, so removal is planned carefully.

  2. Floors

    Brick Houses on Timber Floors

Camberwell’s interwar houses are mostly brick, as the old Camberwell council required brick construction in many areas, yet most still have suspended timber floors. Tiling over timber needs stiff framing and a sheet substrate to avoid cracked tiles. We check joist size and spacing and add support where needed before waterproofing.

  3. Layout

    Finding Room for an Ensuite

Federation and interwar homes in Camberwell were built with one bathroom, so many families want an ensuite. A third bedroom or part of a large main bedroom can become one, but it needs a drainage path to the sewer and an exhaust that vents outside. We map the plumbing route under the floor first.

  4. Heritage

Golf Links and Camberwell Links Estates

Interwar estates such as the Golf Links Estate and the Camberwell Links Estate are Heritage Overlay precincts. Inside the bathroom you can generally make the changes you want, but a new window to the side street, a skylight seen from the front or an exhaust vent on a front wall may need a planning permit from the City of Boroondara.

  5. Ventilation

    Steam and Older Windows

Older Camberwell bathrooms often rely on an openable window and a wall vent, which leaves steam on the ceiling in winter. A ceiling exhaust ducted outside, sized for the room, plus a heated towel rail keeps the room dry. In a heritage home we place outlets discreetly so they are not visible from the street.

  6. Apartments

    Flats Near the Junction

Apartments around Camberwell Junction and Burke Road range from interwar flats to new buildings. Older flats may have shared plumbing stacks and cast iron waste pipes, while newer ones have slab floors with little set-down for a shower. We check the plans, get owners corporation approval and plan noisy work for the hours the building allows.

FAQ

Bathroom Renovations Camberwell: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Does my Camberwell bathroom need a heritage permit?

Usually not. Heritage Overlays in Camberwell, such as the Prospect Hill Road and Golf Links Estate precincts, mainly control external works. A new layout, tiles and fixtures inside the existing room generally need no planning permit. Changes to windows or new vents on the street side can, so we check with the City of Boroondara.

Can we keep the original 1930s tiles in our Camberwell bathroom?

Sometimes. If the tiles are intact and the room has not leaked, a partial refresh may be possible, but a compliant waterproofing membrane cannot be added under existing tiles. Many owners keep one feature, such as a tiled niche or border, or recreate the look with new tiles. We talk through the trade-offs on site.

Will we be without a bathroom for long?

Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. In a Camberwell house with only one bathroom, we plan the order of work to keep the toilet usable for as long as possible and can discuss a temporary option. Rotten floor framing or old pipes found during demolition can add time, and we tell you straight away.

Is it worth adding a second bathroom to our Camberwell home?

For a family home with three or more bedrooms and one bathroom, a second bathroom or ensuite usually makes daily life easier. In Camberwell it is often included in a rear extension, where the plumbing is simpler. A building permit may be needed if walls or structure change, and we check any heritage controls on the extension.

Should I renovate the bathroom before selling our Camberwell house?

In a family home, a single dated bathroom can stand out to buyers walking through. Before a sale, fixing leaks, replacing a tired vanity and tapware, regrouting and improving the lighting can be finished quickly. A full renovation or a new ensuite takes longer, so it suits owners who plan to sell later rather than in the next few weeks.
