Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Fairfield Homes
Most Fairfield weatherboards and bungalows were built with a single bathroom, and many still have one, often updated decades ago with tiles over a timber floor that has moved over time. Some homes have a bathroom squeezed into the rear lean-to beside the laundry, while units and townhouses tend to have small bathrooms with limited storage.
Common bathroom projects here are rebuilding old bathrooms with sound subfloors and full waterproofing, adding an ensuite or second bathroom during an extension, separating a combined bathroom and laundry, and choosing fittings that suit Edwardian and bungalow homes. Most interior bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Darebin City Council, and our licensed trades handle all plumbing and electrical compliance.

Before You Start
What to Plan For in a Fairfield Bathroom
Floors
Floors That Have Moved
Timber floors in Fairfield weatherboards often move with the seasons, which cracks tiles and grout laid straight onto the boards. Before a new bathroom goes in, we check the stumps and joists, restump or pack where needed, and lay a stable sheet substrate so the waterproofing and tiles stay intact for years to come.
Design
Bungalow and Edwardian Style
Fairfield’s Californian bungalows and Edwardian weatherboards suit bathrooms with simple, classic details: subway or hexagonal tiles, a painted timber vanity, and chrome or brushed nickel tapware. These sit well with leadlight windows and high skirtings, while a frameless shower and good lighting keep the room practical for daily use.
Layout
Adding an Ensuite at the Rear
When a Fairfield home is extended at the back, the main bedroom often moves into the new section with an ensuite beside it. Placing the ensuite close to the existing bathroom or laundry keeps the drainage simple. We plan the ensuite with the extension so the plumbing, ventilation and waterproofing are done once, not twice.
Asbestos
Fibre Cement in Old Bathrooms
Bathrooms updated in Fairfield homes during the mid twentieth century were often lined with fibre cement sheet, and some older floor coverings may also contain asbestos. We arrange testing before demolition, and larger quantities are removed by a licensed removalist, which keeps your household and your neighbours safe during the strip-out.
Heating
Warm Bathrooms in Timber Homes
Fairfield weatherboards can be draughty, and a bathroom on an exposed rear corner gets cold in winter. Insulating the walls and ceiling while they are open, adding a heated towel rail or floor heating, and sealing gaps around the window make a big difference. We plan these with the bathroom so they are hidden in the finished work.

Can I separate my combined bathroom and laundry in Fairfield?
Often, yes. In many Fairfield homes the laundry shares the bathroom in the rear lean-to. Moving it into a cupboard or a new laundry area frees space for a bigger shower or vanity. We check the drains under the floor and plan both rooms together so the plumbing is only reworked once.
Do Fairfield’s heritage controls affect bathroom renovations?
Parts of Fairfield, including the Fairfield Village area around Station Street, are in heritage overlays, and some individual places are listed. These controls mostly cover external changes, so an internal bathroom renovation usually needs no planning permit from Darebin City Council. A new window facing the street may need one, which we check.
How long will our Fairfield bathroom take?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. In older Fairfield weatherboards we sometimes find rotten joists or old galvanised pipes once the floor comes up, which can add a few days. We allow for these checks in the schedule and keep you informed if anything changes.
Does my Fairfield bathroom need work before the house is sold or leased?
If it leaks, has cracked tiles or shows mould, fixing those first is wise. In Fairfield’s period weatherboards and bungalows, a well-kept original bathroom can suit the house, so regrouting, new tapware, a fresh vanity and a working exhaust fan may be enough. A full renovation suits owners planning to stay and enjoy it.
