Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Bellfield Homes
Bellfield’s postwar homes were usually built with one small bathroom and a separate toilet, often with original tiles and a shower over the bath. Many now have worn waterproofing and old plumbing hiding behind the walls, while the newer townhouses in the area have compact bathrooms and ensuites with limited storage.
Typical bathroom projects in Bellfield include full renovations with new waterproofing, combining the bathroom and toilet to create more space, adding an ensuite when a home is extended, and improving ventilation and storage in small rooms. Interior bathroom work generally doesn’t need a planning permit from Banyule City Council; townhouses with shared property may also need owners corporation consent.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Bellfield
Layout
Joining the Bathroom and Toilet
Many 1950s Bellfield homes have a small bathroom with a separate toilet beside it. Removing the wall between them can make room for a walk-in shower, a wider vanity and the toilet in one room. In a three-bedroom house with one bathroom, it may still be worth planning a second toilet elsewhere, such as off the laundry.
Asbestos
Fibre Cement in Postwar Homes
Bellfield houses built in the 1950s and 1960s may contain asbestos cement sheeting in bathroom walls, eaves or external cladding. Suspect materials are tested before demolition, and larger amounts are removed by a licensed removalist. We allow for testing early in the program so the bathroom is not delayed once the old tiles come off.
Floors
Stumps Under the Bathroom
Older Bellfield homes on stumps can move over time, which cracks bathroom tiles and opens gaps in the waterproofing. Before tiling, the stumps and joists under the room are checked and replaced or packed if needed. If the whole house is due for restumping, it is best done before the new bathroom goes in, not after.
Waterproofing
Wet Floors in Small Rooms
In a compact Bellfield bathroom the shower is often close to the vanity and door, so water spreads across the floor. Waterproofing the whole floor, grading it towards the waste and fitting a fixed glass screen keep water where it belongs. Our waterproofing is done to the Australian Standard before any tiles are laid.
Townhouses
Townhouse Bathrooms
Bellfield’s newer townhouses usually have a compact main bathroom and an ensuite. Updating them is often about storage, better lighting and replacing builder-grade finishes rather than changing the layout. If the townhouse is part of an owners corporation, changes to plumbing or external vents may need its approval before work begins.

Do I need a permit for a bathroom renovation in Bellfield?
Generally not a planning permit from Banyule City Council for work inside the house. A building permit may be needed if structural walls are changed or a bathroom is added in an extension. All plumbing, electrical and waterproofing work is done by licensed trades, and you receive compliance certificates when the job is complete.
How do we manage with one bathroom during the work?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks once work starts, so in a single-bathroom Bellfield home it is worth planning ahead. Some families stay with relatives, use a gym or arrange a portable shower. Keeping the separate toilet working for as long as possible helps, and we schedule the noisy stages for working hours.
Can we fit an ensuite into our Bellfield house?
Sometimes within the existing house, by borrowing from a robe or a small third bedroom, but in many compact Bellfield homes an ensuite fits best as part of a rear extension. The drain route and fall to the sewer decide where it can go. We check the plumbing under the house before designing.
Is a walk-in shower practical in a small Bellfield bathroom?
Usually, yes. Removing the bath gives a small postwar bathroom much more usable floor space, and a walk-in shower with a single fixed screen keeps the room open. If you need a bath for young children, a shorter bath with a shower over it and a glass panel can still work. We draw both options.
Should we update the bathroom before leasing our Bellfield home?
Victoria’s rental minimum standards require a bathroom to have a washbasin, a shower or bath, and hot and cold water. Many original Bellfield bathrooms meet these but have leaking taps, mouldy grout or a failed exhaust fan. Fixing those, and resealing the shower, is often enough for a rental. A full renovation suits owners planning to stay or with a longer timeframe.
