Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Rosanna Homes
Most Rosanna homes from the 1950s and 1960s were built with one main bathroom and a separate toilet, often with pastel or patterned tiles, a recessed bath and timber-framed windows. Some later additions brought a small ensuite, while units and townhouses tend to have compact bathrooms that are now starting to show their age.
Common bathroom projects here are updating the main bathroom with modern waterproofing and a walk-in shower, adding an ensuite to the main bedroom where space allows, keeping a nod to the home’s mid-century style in tiles and fittings, and improving ventilation. Most bathroom work happens inside the home and doesn’t need a planning permit from Banyule City Council.

Before You Start
Planning a Bathroom Renovation in Rosanna
Design
Keeping Mid-Century Character
Many Rosanna homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, when bathrooms had small mosaic or pastel tiles, timber vanities and simple chrome fittings. Some owners keep that feel with terrazzo-look floors, timber joinery and plain tapware while the waterproofing and plumbing are brought up to date. We help choose finishes that suit the house.
Heritage
Elliston Estate Houses
Merchant Builders houses in the Elliston Estate near Rosanna Parklands date from the late 1960s and were designed around full height glass and courtyards. The estate is in a Heritage Overlay, and parts of it may also be on the Victorian Heritage Register, which can bring permit requirements even for some internal work. We check before design.
Layout
Finding Room for an Ensuite
Postwar Rosanna homes typically have three bedrooms and one bathroom. An ensuite can often fit by taking part of a large bedroom or robe, or by building it into a rear extension. Placing it near the existing bathroom keeps the plumbing simpler. We look at the whole floor plan to find the least disruptive option.
Ventilation
Clearing Steam Properly
Many original Rosanna bathrooms rely on a small window or a ceiling vent into the roof space, so moisture lingers and mould returns. A ducted exhaust fan vented outside, ideally on a run-on timer, and a heated towel rail keep the new room dry. We place the fan where it draws steam away from the shower.
Asbestos
Asbestos in 1950s and 1960s Bathrooms
Wall linings, eaves and the backing behind tiles in Rosanna homes from these decades can contain asbestos cement. Suspect material is tested before demolition, and larger quantities must be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist. Testing and removal are set out in the written quote so there are no surprises.

Bathroom Renovations MelbourneDo I need a permit for a bathroom renovation in Rosanna?
For most Rosanna homes, an internal bathroom renovation needs no planning permit. Houses on the Victorian Heritage Register, which may include parts of the Elliston Estate, can need a permit from Heritage Victoria for some internal work too. Building permits apply to structural changes. We check your property’s status before work starts.
Can I keep my original 1960s bathroom tiles?
Sometimes, if the tiles are sound and the waterproofing beneath them hasn’t failed, but usually not in the shower. A common approach in Rosanna’s mid-century homes is to keep a feature wall, vanity or window while rebuilding the wet area properly. We assess what can be kept safely before demolition.
How long does a Rosanna bathroom renovation take?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. If floor framing has rotted from old leaks, or asbestos needs licensed removal, the job can take a little longer. In a one-bathroom Rosanna home we discuss showering arrangements before work starts and keep the toilet working where possible.
Can we add a second toilet in our Rosanna home?
Often. A powder room off the laundry or hallway, or a toilet in a new ensuite, takes pressure off a single family bathroom in a postwar Rosanna home. The key question is how the new fixtures drain to the sewer, which we check under the floor before planning the layout.
We’re selling our Rosanna house. Is a bathroom update worthwhile?
Rosanna’s mid-century homes have a character that some buyers look for, so a bathroom does not need to look brand new. Leaks, rotten floors and cracked tiles come first, because building inspectors will find them. After that, a careful refresh with new tapware, a vanity and lighting that suits the house is often enough.
