Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom

“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”

Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful

“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”

Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”

Renovating Bathrooms in Viewbank Homes

Many Viewbank homes still have bathrooms from the 1960s and 1970s, with feature tiles, coloured fixtures and a bath with a shower over it. Split-level layouts often place the bathroom on a different level from the main living area, and many homes have only one bathroom or a small ensuite.

In Viewbank, bathroom work usually means full strip-outs with new waterproofing and tiling, walk-in showers and freestanding baths, adding or enlarging ensuites, and better storage and ventilation. Where the slope makes access tricky, drainage and plumbing runs are planned carefully before the room is stripped out. A bathroom renovation in Viewbank seldom needs a planning permit from Banyule City Council; what matters is licensed plumbing, compliant waterproofing and the certificates to prove it, which we handle.

Before You Start

Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Viewbank

  1. Design

Feature Tiles From the 1960s and 1970s

Viewbank was mostly farmland until it was subdivided from the 1960s, so many original bathrooms have feature tiles and coloured basins and baths in blue, green or pink. Some owners keep one element for character, but most replace everything. Taking the room back to the frame lets us check for water damage and install new waterproofing to the Australian Standard.

  2. Slope

    Bathrooms Half a Level Away

In Viewbank’s split-level homes, the bathroom may be up or down half a flight from the kitchen and laundry, with waste pipes running through a suspended floor or along a lower wall to reach the sewer. Moving a toilet or shower needs a clear path for the pipes at the right fall, so we trace the existing runs before planning a new layout.

  3. Floors

    Slab or Timber Floor

Viewbank homes are a mix: some sit on concrete slabs, while split-levels and houses on steeper blocks often have timber floors over a crawl space. Timber floors need a stable substrate and careful detailing so movement doesn’t crack tiles. Slabs are more stable but make moving drains harder, so the floor type shapes the layout you can have.

  4. Asbestos

    Asbestos in 1960s Bathrooms

Viewbank’s 1960s and 1970s homes were built when asbestos cement sheet was common in wet areas, eaves and ceilings. If the bathroom has not been fully renovated since, testing before demolition is sensible. Larger amounts of asbestos must be removed by a licensed removalist, and we allow for this in the fixed-price quote.

  5. Privacy

    Windows Facing Bushland

Some Viewbank bathrooms have a window facing the garden, bushland or a view down the slope, which is pleasant but needs privacy. Obscure glass, a high window over the bath or shower, or a privacy film keeps the light without the room being overlooked. Where neighbours are not close, a larger window can bring in more daylight.

FAQ

Bathroom Renovations Viewbank: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Do I need council approval for a Viewbank bathroom renovation?

Generally not. Internal bathroom work rarely needs a planning permit from Banyule City Council, even where Viewbank properties are in the Significant Landscape Overlay, which deals mainly with taller buildings, vegetation removal and earthworks. The plumbing and electrical work still has to be done by licensed trades, with compliance certificates issued.

Can you replace the bath with a walk-in shower in my Viewbank home?

Usually, yes. In a typical 1960s or 1970s Viewbank bathroom, removing the bath frees space for a larger walk-in shower with a niche and a frameless screen. On a timber floor we may be able to lower the joists slightly for a level entry. If it is your only bathroom, you might keep a bath elsewhere for young children.

How long will we be without a bathroom in our Viewbank home?

Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. If your Viewbank home has only one bathroom, plan how you will manage during that time, such as staying with family for the stages when the shower can’t be used. Homes with an ensuite or a separate toilet are much easier to live in while the work is done.

We’re leasing out our Viewbank house. Is the bathroom good enough?

Victoria’s rental minimum standards say a bathroom must have a washbasin, a shower or bath, and a supply of hot and cold water. Many Viewbank bathrooms from the 1960s and 1970s meet that but show their age, with worn grout, slow drains or a leaking shower base. Fixing leaks and replacing tired fittings is usually more useful to tenants than a full renovation, which can wait until the house is between leases.
