Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Montmorency Homes
Bathrooms in Montmorency’s homes typically date from the 1960s and 70s, with coloured tiles, a bath with shower over and a separate toilet. Split-level and sloping-block homes can have bathrooms on different floors, sometimes on timber floors that have taken years of moisture. Mud brick homes add their own challenges with moisture and wall linings.
Typical Montmorency bathroom projects involve replacing failing floors and waterproofing, converting dated bathrooms into walk-in showers, adding or upgrading an ensuite, and improving ventilation in homes surrounded by trees. Fittings can be chosen to suit the home’s style. Most internal bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Banyule City Council, and licensed trades handle all plumbing and electrical work with compliance certificates.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Montmorency
Materials
Mud Brick Walls in Wet Areas
Montmorency was part of the Shire of Eltham until 1994 and shares some of its mud brick building tradition. Earth walls must be kept dry, so bathrooms in these homes need a suitable lining and waterproofing system between the brick and the tiles, with careful detailing at the shower and floor. We assess the walls before choosing finishes.
Floors
Timber Floors That Have Been Wet
Bathrooms in Montmorency’s post-war weatherboards and split-levels often sit on timber floors that have had years of slow leaks. Once the floor is opened, rotten boards and joists are replaced, and the new floor is sheeted and waterproofed to the Australian Standard. We allow for checking this in the written quote.
Ventilation
Mould Under the Canopy
Homes under Montmorency’s tall eucalypts get less direct sun, so bathrooms dry out slowly and mould builds on ceilings and grout. A ducted exhaust fan vented outside, a heated towel rail and, where possible, a window or skylight all help. We size the fan to the room and run the duct to the outside, not into the roof space.
Asbestos
Asbestos in Post-War Homes
Montmorency filled with houses from the late 1940s to the 1970s, a period when asbestos cement sheet was widely used in bathrooms, eaves and sleepouts. Testing before demolition is sensible in any bathroom not renovated since then, and larger amounts must be removed by a licensed removalist. This is allowed for in the fixed-price quote.
Plumbing
Drain Falls on Hilly Sites
On Montmorency’s hilly streets, a bathroom can sit well above or below the point where the sewer leaves the property. A new shower or toilet position still has to fall to the drain, and in some lower-level rooms that limits where fixtures can go. We find the sewer connection before suggesting a new layout.

Can you renovate a bathroom in a Montmorency mud brick home?
Yes. The key is keeping moisture away from the earth walls. That means a suitable lining and waterproofing system in the shower and wet areas, good ventilation and careful sealing where pipes pass through. Mud brick outside the wet zone can be left exposed and sealed to keep the character of the house.
Do I need a permit for a bathroom renovation in Montmorency?
Generally not a planning permit, because internal work is not usually controlled by the Banyule Planning Scheme. The vegetation and design overlays in parts of Montmorency relate mainly to trees, buildings and fences rather than internal rooms. The plumbing and electrical work is done by licensed trades, who provide compliance certificates.
How long does a Montmorency bathroom renovation take?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. Montmorency homes with rotten floor framing, mud brick walls that need extra preparation or tight access down a steep driveway can take a little longer. We let you know quickly if we find anything that affects the timeline.
Before selling my Montmorency house, should I fix up the bathroom?
Montmorency buyers are often drawn to the bush setting and the character of older homes, but they will still notice a bathroom with mould, soft floors or leaks. Fixing the cause of the damp, replacing a failing shower base and updating the tapware and vanity can make the room feel sound. A full renovation is worth considering when the floor or waterproofing has already failed.
