Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom

“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”

Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful

“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”

Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”

Renovating Bathrooms in Bundoora Homes

Bundoora’s houses date mostly from the 1960s onwards, with brick veneer homes in the older streets, larger brick homes from the 1980s and 1990s, and newer housing on former hospital land. A typical older home has one main bathroom with a shower over the bath, a laminate-topped vanity and a separate toilet, while the larger homes add a basic ensuite. Units and apartments near the universities usually have compact bathrooms.

Common bathroom projects here are replacing failed shower bases and leaking tiles, converting shower-over-bath setups to walk-in showers, rebuilding small ensuites with wall-hung vanities and better storage, and choosing hard-wearing finishes for rental properties. Bathroom work inside the house generally doesn’t need a planning permit from Banyule, Darebin or Whittlesea councils, and our licensed plumbers and electricians issue the compliance certificates.

Before You Start

What to Plan For in a Bundoora Bathroom

  1. Layout

Making More of a 1980s Ensuite

Bundoora homes from the 1980s and 1990s often include a small ensuite off the main bedroom with a narrow shower and a single basin. Borrowing space from the walk-in robe or a hallway can make room for a larger shower and a double vanity. We check which walls carry roof loads and where the wastes run before redesigning the room.

  2. Waterproofing

    Old Shower Bases

Older Bundoora bathrooms often have a mortar shower base or a moulded tray with tiles running down to it, and decades of movement can crack the grout line and let water into the wall frame or slab edge. Swollen or rotten skirting in the next room is a common sign. We remove the old base and waterproof to the Australian Standard before retiling.

  3. Asbestos

Asbestos in 1960s and 70s Bathrooms

Bundoora homes built before 1990 may have asbestos cement sheet behind wall tiles, in the ceiling or as a backing under old vinyl. We arrange testing of suspect material before demolition, and larger quantities are removed by a licensed removalist. Finding out early avoids delays once the old bathroom has been stripped out.

  4. Rentals

    Bathrooms in Student Rentals

Many Bundoora units and houses near La Trobe and RMIT are leased to students and young households, so the bathroom sees heavy daily use. Hard-wearing floor tiles, a one-piece vanity top, a fixed shower screen and a strong exhaust fan reduce maintenance between tenancies. We suggest finishes that clean easily and stand up to shared use.

  5. Apartments

    Owners Corporation Approval

Bathroom work in a Bundoora apartment, or a unit with an owners corporation, may need approval where pipes, waterproofing or walls are shared. Rules often limit work hours, lift use and noise. We prepare the scope and drawings the owners corporation needs and coordinate access with the building manager or neighbouring owners.

  6. Access

    Planning to Stay Long Term

Some Bundoora owners who bought in the 1970s and 80s now want a bathroom they can keep using as they age. Replacing the bath with a level-entry shower, adding grab rails fixed to wall blocking, a comfort-height toilet and slip-resistant tiles make daily use safer. We design these features so the room still looks like a modern bathroom.

FAQ

Bathroom Renovations Bundoora: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Which council approves building work at my Bundoora address?

It depends on where you are. The part of Bundoora east of Plenty Road is in Banyule, the west side towards Darebin Creek is in Darebin, and the northern part is in Whittlesea. Your VicPlan property report shows the council and any overlays. For an internal bathroom renovation, the council rarely needs to be involved.

How do we manage a bathroom renovation in a Bundoora home with one bathroom?

Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. Many older Bundoora homes have just one bathroom and a separate toilet, so we try to keep the toilet working for as long as possible and tell you in advance which days the water will be off. Some owners arrange to stay elsewhere for the few days without a shower.

Can I replace the bath with a walk-in shower in my Bundoora home?

Yes, it is one of the most common changes. Many Bundoora bathrooms have a shower over the bath that is awkward to step into. A walk-in shower can use the same plumbing wall, but the floor waste usually needs to move, which on a slab means cutting the concrete. We check the drainage before quoting.

Is it worth renovating the bathroom before leasing our Bundoora unit?

With many Bundoora units leased near the universities, tenants often compare several before choosing. A bathroom that is clean, leak-free and well ventilated will usually present better than one with mouldy grout and a worn vanity. Regrouting, resealing and replacing the tapware and vanity can be enough, while a full rebuild suits units with leaks or failed waterproofing.
