Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Thomastown Homes
Original bathrooms in Thomastown’s postwar homes usually have shoulder-height wall tiles, a bath with a shower over it, a separate toilet and a vanity that has seen better days. Many homes still have just one bathroom for the whole family, while units and townhouses in the area often have compact bathrooms with little storage.
Typical Thomastown bathroom projects include full strip-outs with new waterproofing and tiling, replacing baths with walk-in showers, improving storage and ventilation, and adding a second toilet or an ensuite where layouts allow. Many owners also ask for grab rails and step-free showers for older family members. Interior bathroom work in Thomastown rarely needs a planning permit from the City of Whittlesea, but all plumbing, waterproofing and electrical work is done by licensed trades and certified.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Thomastown
Timing
One Bathroom for a Whole Household
Thomastown filled with houses after the war as factories opened nearby, and most homes from the 1950s and 1960s were built with a single bathroom and a separate toilet. If that one room is being stripped, plan how the household will shower for the 2 to 4 weeks the work usually takes, or stage the toilet so it stays usable.
Accessibility
Grab Rails and Step-Free Showers
Many Thomastown homes have been owned by the same family since the 1960s or 1970s, and some now house grandparents as well as children. A level-entry shower, a fold-down seat, slip-resistant tiles and timber noggins in the walls for rails can be built in now, even if the rails themselves go in later.
Asbestos
Cement Sheet Behind the Tiles
Bathrooms in pre-1990 Thomastown homes often have fibre cement sheet behind wall tiles, under the floor or in the ceiling, and some of it contains asbestos. It needs testing before demolition. Small amounts can be handled under strict controls, while larger amounts have to be removed by a licensed removalist, and we allow for this in the quote.
Plumbing
An Ensuite in a Triple-Fronted Home
Triple-fronted homes in Thomastown usually have a generous main bedroom at the front and a hallway bathroom further back. An ensuite can sometimes come from a deep built-in robe or a small third bedroom. The question is where the waste can run, because many of these homes are on stumps and the sewer connection is usually at the rear.
Apartments
Units on Shared Blocks
Older Thomastown lots have often been split for two or three units, many with a compact bathroom against a common wall. Where there is an owners corporation, approval may be needed for noise, work hours or any change to shared pipes. We coordinate with the owners corporation and keep noise to agreed hours for your neighbours.

Bathroom Renovations In and Around Thomastown
Thomastown (3074) is about 15 km north of the Melbourne CBD, and well within our regular service area. We renovate bathrooms in Thomastown and its neighbouring suburbs, with the same team, the same fixed pricing and the same attention to detail.
Bathroom Renovations MelbourneDoes a Thomastown bathroom renovation need council approval?
Rarely. Replacing fixtures, tiles and waterproofing inside an existing bathroom generally needs no planning permit from the City of Whittlesea. Moving walls or extending the house for a new bathroom may need a building permit. Every job finishes with a plumbing compliance certificate and a Certificate of Electrical Safety, and we check any permit questions before work starts.
Can you make our Thomastown bathroom safer for my parents?
Yes. In many Thomastown homes the bath is the hardest thing for older family members to use. Swapping it for a step-free shower, adding grab rails, a raised toilet and brighter lighting makes a big difference. We can keep the look warm and modern rather than clinical, and talk through what will help in years to come.
Our house is on stumps. Does that change how the bathroom is built?
It can. Many postwar Thomastown homes have a timber floor on stumps, so we check the joists and subfloor for rot or movement before tiling. A tiled floor needs a stiff, level base, and waterproofing to the Australian Standard has to suit a timber floor that moves slightly. We tell you what we find before work continues.
We are renting out our Thomastown house. Is the bathroom worth doing first?
Often a tidy, sound bathroom matters more than a new one. In Thomastown’s 1960s homes look for leaks around the bath, loose or drummy tiles, a tired vanity and an exhaust fan that no longer clears steam. Fixing these may be enough for tenants or buyers. A full renovation makes more sense when the waterproofing has failed or the room is in poor shape.
