Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Eltham Homes
Many Eltham homes were built from the 1960s through the 1980s, and their bathrooms show it: earthy coloured tiles, timber vanities, small showers and, in mud brick houses, rough walls and uneven floors that need careful work. Larger family homes often have an ensuite and main bathroom that are both overdue for an update.
That shapes most of our Eltham bathroom renovations: replacing dated 1970s and 1980s bathrooms, waterproofing properly against brick, stone or timber, adding walk-in showers and better ventilation, and updating ensuites in larger homes. Most interior bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Nillumbik Shire Council, and we check early for any structural or access issues on sloping sites before we start.

What to Plan For in an Eltham Bathroom
Waterproofing
Wet Areas Against Mud Brick
Eltham is known for mud brick houses built from the late 1940s onwards, many influenced by Alistair Knox. Earth walls must not stay wet, so a shower against mud brick needs a properly framed and lined wall, full waterproofing to the Australian Standard and good ventilation. We work out early which walls are earth and which are framed.
Floors
Floors on Several Levels
Split level and pole homes on Eltham’s sloping blocks often have bathrooms on a suspended timber floor or over a lower room. We check the floor structure once the old tiles are up, and plan the drainage fall carefully, because a leak here can damage a ceiling or living area below as well as the frame.
Materials
Natural Timber and Stone Finishes
Many Eltham homes use exposed timber, recycled brick and stone inside. A new bathroom does not have to fight that. Timber-look or stone vanities, earthy tiles and a clear glass screen can sit comfortably with the rest of the house while still being easy to clean and properly sealed against moisture.
Access
Getting Materials onto Steep Sites
Long, steep driveways and houses set well below the street are common in Eltham. Tile pallets, vanities and the skip bin may need to stop at the top, with everything carried down by hand. We look at access at the first visit so the plan and your fixed-price quote reflect it.
Heritage
Heritage-listed Mud Brick Homes
A number of Eltham’s significant mud brick houses, such as the Busst House and Alistair Knox’s own home, are individually listed in a Heritage Overlay. Internal bathroom work is usually not affected, but new windows or external changes on a listed house may need a planning permit from Nillumbik Shire Council. We check before design.

Can you renovate a bathroom in an Eltham mud brick house?
Yes, but it needs more care than a brick veneer home. Mud brick must be protected from water, so wet walls are usually lined over a frame and fully waterproofed, and ventilation is planned so moisture does not build up. Fixings and openings are also handled differently in earth walls, which we allow for in the quote.
Do I need a permit to renovate my Eltham bathroom?
Most internal bathroom work does not need a planning permit. If your home is individually listed in a Heritage Overlay and the work changes the outside, such as a new window, a permit from Nillumbik Shire Council may be needed. A building permit is generally needed only for structural changes.
Our ensuite and main bathroom are both from the 1980s. Should we do both at once?
Doing both together often saves time, as trades, waterproofing and tiling run back to back, but it leaves you without a working shower. Many Eltham families renovate one first so the other stays in use. Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks each, and we can plan either approach.
Could there be asbestos in a 1970s Eltham bathroom?
It is possible. Homes built before 1990 can have asbestos cement sheeting behind tiles, in ceilings or in eaves. It is checked before demolition, and larger amounts must be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist. We include this in your quote so it does not come as a surprise.
What should I fix in an Eltham bathroom before renting out the house?
In Eltham’s 1970s and 80s homes, bathrooms commonly have leaking showers, timber-lined walls affected by moisture and poor ventilation, and the ensuite is often as dated as the main bathroom. Some may contain asbestos sheeting, which needs testing before work starts. For tenants, fixing waterproofing and adding a ducted exhaust fan come first, followed by reliable hot water and safe flooring. A simple, durable finish usually suits a rental better than a feature bathroom.
