Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Oak Park Homes
Bathrooms in Oak Park’s 1950s and 1960s houses are usually original or lightly updated, with pastel or patterned wall tiles, a bath with a shower over it and a separate toilet along the hall. Few of these homes were built with an ensuite, while the newer townhouses on subdivided blocks tend to have two compact bathrooms with plain builder’s finishes.
Common projects are rebuilding the main bathroom with new waterproofing, adding an ensuite from part of a bedroom or robe, replacing the shower over bath with a walk-in shower, and improving ventilation and lighting. Bathroom work inside the house generally doesn’t need a planning permit from Merri-bek City Council, and our licensed trades provide the plumbing and electrical certificates.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Oak Park
Floors
Timber Floors Under the Tiles
Many postwar Oak Park houses have timber floors on stumps, and decades of small leaks can leave the joists and floor sheeting under the bathroom soft or rotten. We replace damaged framing and fit a stable substrate before waterproofing to the Australian Standard. Checking under the floor early avoids surprises once the old tiles are lifted.
Plumbing
Old Galvanised Pipes
Water pipes in some Oak Park homes of the 1950s and 1960s are galvanised steel, which corrodes from the inside and slowly reduces water pressure. A bathroom renovation is a good time to replace the supply pipes back to where they are sound, along with old drainage connections. Our licensed plumbers issue a compliance certificate for the new work.
Layout
Finding Room for an Ensuite
Oak Park’s postwar homes usually have three bedrooms and one bathroom. An ensuite can often be made from a robe, part of the main bedroom or an enclosed back porch, provided the drainage can reach the sewer line with enough fall. We check the fall and the drain route under the floor before drawing up a layout for you.
Design
Compact Townhouse Bathrooms
Townhouse bathrooms in Oak Park are often windowless or have one small high window, with standard tiles and basic fixtures. Better lighting, a larger shower with a frameless screen, a wall-hung vanity and recessed shelving make a compact room feel bigger. If your townhouse has an owners corporation, we check whether its approval is needed first.
Ventilation
Mould and Fresh Air
Bathrooms in older Oak Park homes often relied on a window alone, and it tends to stay shut through winter. Steam then settles on the ceiling and grout, and mould follows. A ducted exhaust fan vented outside and sized for the room keeps it dry, and a heated towel rail helps towels and the room dry faster in the cooler months.

Should the separate toilet be combined with the bathroom in our Oak Park home?
In many Oak Park homes the toilet is in its own small room beside the bathroom. Combining them can make space for a larger shower and a double vanity, but a household sharing one bathroom often prefers to keep the toilet separate. We draw both options so you can compare how each one works before deciding.
Does a bathroom renovation in Oak Park need a permit?
Bathroom work inside an existing house generally doesn’t need a planning permit from Merri-bek City Council, as heritage controls in the few listed Oak Park places mostly cover external changes. Plumbing and electrical work must be carried out by licensed trades, who provide a compliance certificate and a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
How long will we be without a bathroom?
Most of our bathrooms are finished within 2 to 4 weeks of starting. In an Oak Park house with a timber floor, replacing rotten joists can add a few days, and choosing tiles early avoids delays. If yours is the only bathroom, we discuss the timing and any temporary arrangements before the old room comes out.
Can a bath be kept in a small Oak Park bathroom?
Yes. A standard bath can stay alongside a separate shower if the room is wide enough, or a shower over a bath with a fixed glass panel can work well in narrower postwar bathrooms. Families with young children often prefer to keep a bath. We measure the room and show you each layout before you choose.
We are leasing our Oak Park house. Does the bathroom need work?
Victoria’s rental minimum standards call for a bathroom with a washbasin, a shower or bath, and a supply of hot and cold water. Most Oak Park bathrooms meet those but may have cracked tiles, worn grout or an exhaust fan that doesn’t vent outside. Fixing leaks, regrouting and replacing tired fittings are usually the practical priorities before a tenant moves in.
