Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom

Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful

“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”

Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”

Renovating Bathrooms in Pascoe Vale Homes

Many Pascoe Vale homes still have one main bathroom from the 1950s or 1960s, with small tiles, a bath with a shower over it and a separate toilet. Older bungalows sometimes have a bathroom added in the back verandah, while townhouses built in recent decades usually have two bathrooms but compact layouts.

That shapes most Pascoe Vale bathroom renovations: rebuilding a dated main bathroom with full waterproofing, adding an ensuite during an extension, combining a separate toilet and bathroom for more space, and replacing old galvanised plumbing. Most bathroom work happens inside the home and doesn’t need a planning permit from Merri-bek City Council, and our licensed trades provide the plumbing compliance certificate and Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Before You Start

Planning a Pascoe Vale Bathroom Renovation

  1. Structure

Homes Built in the Post-war Boom

Much of Pascoe Vale was filled with houses in the 1950s, many put up by owner-builders or through the War Service Homes scheme. Building methods varied, so wall framing, floor structure and plumbing can be less standard than you’d expect. Once the old bathroom is stripped we check what’s behind the tiles and fix anything that isn’t sound.

  2. Asbestos

    Fibro Behind the Tiles

Fibro cement sheeting was widely used in 1950s and 1960s homes like many in Pascoe Vale, including in bathroom walls, ceilings and eaves. Suspect materials are checked before demolition. If asbestos is present, it is removed safely in line with WorkSafe Victoria requirements, and larger amounts are handled by a licensed removalist.

  3. Ventilation

    Ventilation in a Mid-century Bathroom

Bathrooms in Pascoe Vale’s post-war homes often relied on a single window for ventilation, which is why mould on ceilings is so common. A new bathroom should have an exhaust fan ducted outside rather than into the roof space, sized for the room. It protects the new paint, grout and ceiling from moisture damage.

  4. Storage

A Bathroom That Suits a Family

Pascoe Vale is a family suburb, and many households still share one bathroom. Keeping a bath for young children, adding a separate shower, choosing a double vanity and allowing for plenty of storage all help. Where space is tight, a bath with a shower screen and a wall-hung vanity is a good compromise.

  5. Plumbing

    Ensuites in Rear Extensions

Families extending a post-war Pascoe Vale home often add a main bedroom and ensuite at the back. Planning the ensuite with the extension keeps drainage runs short and lets the shower and toilet sit close to existing sewer lines. Building the ensuite as part of the same job also means one permit and one set of trades.

  6. Warranty

    Townhouse Bathrooms

Many older Pascoe Vale houses have been replaced with townhouses on subdivided blocks. Their bathrooms are usually compact and on upper floors, so access and waterproofing matter. If your townhouse is still under the original builder’s warranty, it’s worth checking how renovation work could affect any future claim before you start.

FAQ

Bathroom Renovations Pascoe Vale: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
My Pascoe Vale house was owner-built in the 1950s. Does that affect a bathroom renovation?

It can. Owner-built homes sometimes have framing, floors or plumbing that don’t match standard practice, and these only show up once the old tiles come off. We allow for checking the structure and services in your quote, and we tell you straight away if something needs fixing before the new waterproofing goes down.

Can I add an ensuite without extending the house?

Sometimes. In Pascoe Vale’s post-war homes, part of a large main bedroom or a spare room beside the bathroom can become an ensuite. The key checks are where the drains run and whether there’s room for a shower, toilet and vanity. We assess both at the first visit.

Do I need a permit to renovate a bathroom in Pascoe Vale?

Usually not. Internal bathroom work generally doesn’t need a planning permit from Merri-bek City Council, and Heritage Overlays are less common in Pascoe Vale than in Brunswick or Coburg. A building permit may be needed if walls that carry load are moved. We check your property’s controls before work starts.

How long will a Pascoe Vale bathroom renovation take?

Allow 2 to 4 weeks for most bathroom renovations. In older post-war homes we sometimes find old pipes or floor damage that adds a few days, and we let you know as soon as we do. If yours is the only bathroom in the house, we plan the schedule with you so the days without a shower are clear.

Is it a good idea to renovate a Pascoe Vale bathroom ahead of a sale or a new lease?

Many Pascoe Vale homes were built in the 1950s and still have the original bathroom: small, tiled to shoulder height, with a bath and shower combined. Buyers and renters will look past an older style if the room is clean, dry and works well. Prioritise waterproofing, ventilation and replacing worn fittings. For rentals, Victoria’s rental minimum standards require a washbasin, a shower or bath, and a reasonable supply of hot and cold water.
