Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom

Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful

“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”

Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”

Renovating Bathrooms in Glenroy Homes

Most of Glenroy’s postwar homes were built with one bathroom and a separate toilet, and many still have original tiles, a bath with shower over and ageing pipework. Units from the 1960s and 1970s have similar small bathrooms, while new townhouses usually include an ensuite but in a tight footprint.

Common Glenroy bathroom work includes stripping and rebuilding original bathrooms with full waterproofing, replacing old pipes, converting baths to walk-in showers, and adding an ensuite to family homes where there is room. Our Glenroy bathroom project, for example, renovated a main bathroom and ensuite with marble-look tiles, a freestanding corner bath and a level-entry walk-in shower. Most interior bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Merri-bek City Council, and our licensed plumbers and electricians provide compliance certificates.

Before You Start

Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Glenroy

  1. Layout

    The 1950s Bathroom and Toilet

Many homes from Glenroy’s post-war building boom were built with a compact bathroom and a toilet in its own small room off the hall. Joining the two gives space for a wider vanity and a proper shower, but it moves the toilet pan and its waste. Whether the floor is timber or concrete decides how easily the pipes can move.

  2. Structure

    Who Built Your House

Large parts of Glenroy were developed after the war by the Housing Commission of Victoria and the War Service Homes Commission, alongside owner-builders. Construction varies from house to house, so we look at the wall linings, floor framing and roof space at the first visit to see what lies behind the tiles before quoting.

  3. Asbestos

    Fibro Sheeting

Post-war Glenroy homes often used asbestos cement sheeting in bathroom walls, ceilings and eaves. Testing suspect sheeting before demolition tells you what is there, and larger quantities need a licensed asbestos removalist. Our quote shows this step separately so you know how it affects the cost and the timeline.

  4. Waterproofing

    Level-Entry Showers

A shower without a hob is easier to step into and clean, and suits owners planning to stay in their Glenroy home for the long term. Our Glenroy bathroom project included an ensuite walk-in shower with a level-entry base, a semi-frameless screen and a strip drain. On a timber floor, the framing is set down so the waterproofing and fall to the drain work.

  5. Design

    Adding an Ensuite

Glenroy blocks are typically wide enough for a rear extension, so an ensuite is often added with a new main bedroom at the back. Without an extension, a spare bedroom or part of a wide hallway can sometimes become an ensuite. A building permit may be needed if walls or structure change, and we check this early.

  6. Plumbing

    Original Pipes and Drains

Galvanised supply pipes and earthenware drains are common in 1950s homes and can leak or block with roots. During a bathroom renovation, our licensed plumbers replace the pipes in the walls and floor and check the drains. You receive a plumbing compliance certificate when the work is done.

FAQ

Bathroom Renovations Glenroy: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Do I need a permit from Merri-bek City Council to renovate my Glenroy bathroom?

Generally not. Glenroy has few Heritage Overlays, mostly on individual older houses, so internal bathroom work rarely needs a planning permit. A building permit may be needed if you move walls or extend. Plumbing and electrical work must be done by licensed trades, and we provide the certificates.

Can I see a bathroom you have renovated in Glenroy?

Yes. Our Glenroy bathroom project, completed in 2023, renovated a main bathroom and ensuite with marble-look tiles across floors and walls, a freestanding corner bath, a fixed glass shower panel and a feature wall with a recessed niche. The ensuite has a larger level-entry walk-in shower. Photos are on the project page.

Should we keep a bath in our Glenroy bathroom?

If you have young children, a bath is still useful. Our Glenroy project kept a freestanding corner bath in the main bathroom and put a walk-in shower in the ensuite, which gives a household both options. If the house has only one small bathroom and nobody uses the bath, a walk-in shower gives more room. We can draw both layouts.

How long will our Glenroy bathroom take?

Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. In a 1950s Glenroy home, removing fibro sheeting, replacing old pipes or repairing floor framing can add a few days. If you have only one bathroom, we talk through a temporary arrangement before starting so the household can manage.

Is it worth renovating the bathroom before leasing or selling a Glenroy home?

Many Glenroy houses still have original bathrooms, so buyers or tenants may see a dated room as a job they will have to do. Fixing leaks, replacing a worn vanity and taps, regrouting and replacing an old exhaust fan are practical steps. A full rebuild suits a longer timeline. On rentals, make sure the shower and hot water work reliably before tenants move in.
