Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Broadmeadows Homes
Broadmeadows grew around one of Melbourne’s largest Housing Commission estates, started around 1950, and many of those homes have long since passed into private ownership. Bathrooms in the original houses are usually small, with a bath, a basin and a separate toilet, and many family homes still have only one bathroom shared by everyone in the house.
Typical bathroom projects here include full renovations with new waterproofing, swapping the bath for a walk-in shower or reworking the layout to fit both, adding a second bathroom or ensuite, and improving ventilation and storage. Interior bathroom work generally doesn’t need a planning permit from Hume City Council, and plumbing and electrical work is done by licensed trades.

Before You Start
What to Plan For in a Broadmeadows Bathroom
Layout
Small Commission-Era Bathrooms
Bathrooms in former Housing Commission homes in Broadmeadows were built to compact standard plans, usually around a bath with a shower over it. Removing the bath for a walk-in shower, choosing a wall-hung vanity and recessing storage into the wall make the most of the floor area. We draw a few options so you can see what fits before deciding.
Asbestos
Asbestos Sheeting
Homes built in Broadmeadows from the 1950s to the 1980s may contain asbestos cement sheeting in bathroom walls, ceilings or eaves, or under old floor coverings. It is safe until disturbed, but a bathroom strip-out will disturb it. We arrange testing where it is suspected, and larger amounts are removed by a licensed removalist before demolition.
Plumbing
Old Pipes and Low Pressure
Original Broadmeadows homes may still have galvanised water pipes and old drainage lines. Corroded pipes reduce water pressure, discolour the water and can leak inside walls. A bathroom renovation is a good time to replace the pipework in the room and fit new mixers. Our licensed plumbers provide a compliance certificate when the work is complete.
Planning
Easing Pressure on One Bathroom
Larger Broadmeadows households often struggle with a single bathroom. A second toilet in the laundry, an ensuite carved from part of a bedroom or a new bathroom in a rear extension can take the pressure off. We check where new fixtures can connect to the drainage and whether a building permit is needed for any wall changes.
Ventilation
Mould and Ventilation
Small original bathrooms in Broadmeadows often have only a small window, and mould on the ceiling and grout is common through winter. An exhaust fan ducted outside, a window that opens properly and moisture-resistant plasterboard reduce the problem. We size the fan to the room and place it where it will clear steam from the shower quickly.

Do I need a permit to renovate my Broadmeadows bathroom?
Internal bathroom work in Broadmeadows usually needs no planning permit from Hume City Council. Moving walls or altering the structure can trigger the need for a building permit. Licensed plumbers and electricians carry out the services and provide compliance certificates. If your unit has an owners corporation, its approval may be needed for plumbing changes.
Can I fit both a shower and a bath in a small bathroom?
Sometimes. In many Broadmeadows bathrooms, removing the wall to the separate toilet creates enough room for a shower and a bath, with the toilet moved into the bathroom. Other families prefer a larger walk-in shower and keep the toilet separate for busy mornings. We sketch each layout so you can weigh them up side by side.
How long will my Broadmeadows bathroom take?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. Asbestos removal, floor repairs or replacing old pipes can add time. If the home has only one bathroom, we plan the schedule so you know in advance when the shower and toilet will be out of action, and we keep the separate toilet working as long as possible.
Should I renovate the bathroom before selling or leasing in Broadmeadows?
Many Broadmeadows homes still have their original single bathroom. If it is dated but working, cleaning, regrouting, new tapware and a new vanity can be enough before listing. A leaking shower, a damaged floor or a bathroom with no working exhaust is worth fixing properly, as tenants and building inspectors will notice. A full renovation suits owners staying for some years.
