Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Attwood Homes
Attwood’s older streets were built from around 1980, and newer estates followed from the late 1990s, so many homes have a main bathroom and an ensuite from one era or the other. Feature tiles, small showers and vanities that no longer suit a busy household are common, and shower bases and wall junctions in bathrooms of this age often hide leaks and damaged framing.
Typical bathroom projects here include replacing original main bathrooms with modern layouts, enlarging cramped ensuites to fit a better shower and double vanity, fixing failed waterproofing, and adding storage, heating and better lighting. Most interior bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Hume City Council, and all plumbing and electrical work comes with compliance certificates.

Before You Start
What to Plan For in an Attwood Bathroom
Asbestos
Two Eras, Two Checks
Attwood homes from around 1980 were built before 1990, so their bathrooms may contain asbestos cement sheeting behind the tiles or in the ceiling, while later estate homes generally won’t. Knowing your build year helps plan the strip-out. Where asbestos is suspected we arrange testing first, and larger amounts are removed by a licensed removalist before demolition.
Layout
Ensuites Beside the Robe
Ensuites in Attwood’s family homes were often fitted into a narrow space between the main bedroom and the robe. Reworking the robe, swapping a hinged door for a cavity slider or using a wall-hung vanity can free up room for a larger shower. We check plumbing positions and wall framing before suggesting which walls can move.
Waterproofing
Shower Bases and Hidden Leaks
Older Attwood showers commonly have a tiled bed or acrylic base, with grout and silicone that has failed at the corners. Water can travel into wall framing and along the slab edge for years before it shows. We remove the old base, repair any damaged timber or concrete edges and waterproof the new shower to the Australian Standard.
Heating
Warmth on Winter Mornings
Many Attwood bathrooms still rely on an old heat lamp fitting that warms the person underneath and little else. Heated towel rails, a combined heat, light and exhaust unit or electric underfloor heating make a much bigger difference on cold mornings on Melbourne’s northern edge. Our licensed electricians install them and provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Access
Accessible Showers
Many Attwood owners have lived in their homes for decades and want a bathroom that keeps suiting them as they age. A level-entry shower, a handheld shower on a sliding rail, grab rails and a comfort-height toilet can all be included now. We reinforce the walls during the renovation so more rails can be added later without opening them up.

Do I need council approval for an Attwood bathroom renovation?
Usually not a planning permit from Hume City Council for internal work. Structural changes or moved walls may call for a building permit. Our licensed plumbers provide a compliance certificate, and our electricians issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety. We confirm the requirements for your home before starting.
Can we renovate the ensuite and main bathroom together?
Yes, and in many Attwood homes it makes sense, because both bathrooms date from the same time and have similar problems. Doing them together saves on setup and trade visits, but it can leave the house without a shower for a period. We can stage the work so one bathroom is always usable.
How long does a bathroom renovation take in Attwood?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks, depending on size, repairs to framing or the slab edge, any asbestos removal and your finishes. For an Attwood home built around 1980, allow for testing and possible removal before demolition starts. We provide a written schedule and keep you updated as the work progresses.
Do we need a new bathroom before selling our Attwood home?
Not always. Attwood buyers are often families looking for space, and many accept an older bathroom if it is clean and watertight. Regrouting, resealing, new tapware, a fresh vanity and a new shower screen may be enough. If the shower is leaking or the floor is damaged, fixing it properly before listing avoids surprises at the building inspection.
