Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Tullamarine Homes
Tullamarine’s homes mostly went up from the 1960s, as the old farming township around Melrose Drive gave way to housing estates beside the new airport. Bathrooms in these brick veneer houses are often original, with coloured tiles, a bath with an overhead shower and a separate toilet, and most homes have only one bathroom. Units built on subdivided blocks usually have small bathrooms that need better storage and ventilation.
Typical bathroom projects here include full strip-outs with new waterproofing, tiles and fixtures, converting baths into walk-in showers, adding an ensuite where space allows, and fitting accessible features for older residents. Hume City Council rarely needs to approve an internal bathroom renovation, so the focus is on licensed plumbers and electricians, waterproofing to the Australian Standard and, for units, any owners corporation approval.

Before You Start
What to Plan For in a Tullamarine Bathroom
Waterproofing
Original Recesses and Shower Bases
Many Tullamarine bathrooms still have their original tiled shower recess or an early fibreglass base, and the waterproofing behind them has often failed after decades of use. Swollen skirting, loose tiles and a musty smell are common signs. A full strip-out lets us replace the waterproofing to the Australian Standard rather than sealing over the problem and hoping it holds.
Access
Bathrooms for Ageing in Place
Long-term Tullamarine owners often want a bathroom they can keep using comfortably as they get older. A level-entry shower, grab rails fixed into reinforced walls, a comfort-height toilet and slip-resistant floor tiles make a real difference. We add timber noggings behind the wall linings during the renovation, so rails can be fitted securely now or added later.
Layout
Finding Room for an Ensuite
With most Tullamarine homes built with a single bathroom, adding an ensuite to the main bedroom is a common wish. Space can come from a built-in robe, part of a hallway or a small adjoining bedroom. We check where waste pipes can run and whether that part of the house is on stumps or a slab, which changes how drainage is connected.
Plumbing
Moving Wet Areas on a Slab
Some later Tullamarine homes and most infill units are built on concrete slabs, so moving a toilet, shower or floor waste means cutting the slab to reroute drainage. It is often worth keeping the wet areas close to their current positions. We locate the existing drains before design and explain which layout changes are simple and which involve slab work.
Asbestos
Testing for Asbestos
Bathrooms in Tullamarine homes built before 1990 may have asbestos cement sheeting behind the wall tiles, in the ceiling or beneath the floor coverings. It is safe until it is disturbed, and a strip-out disturbs it. Larger amounts must be removed by a licensed removalist, so we arrange testing where it is suspected and build any removal into the schedule.

How long does a bathroom renovation take in Tullamarine?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. Floor repairs, asbestos removal, a layout change or custom items such as a frameless screen can add time. Because many Tullamarine homes have just one bathroom, we go through the schedule with you before starting and keep the separate toilet working wherever possible.
Can a bath be swapped for a walk-in shower?
Yes. In a typical Tullamarine bathroom, the bath along the end wall can often become a larger walk-in shower with a hob-free entry and a recessed niche. Some families with young children or grandchildren prefer to keep a bath, so we can show a layout with both if the room is large enough.
Do I need council approval for a Tullamarine bathroom?
Usually not a planning permit from Hume City Council, because the work is internal. Taking out walls or changing the structure may also need a building permit. Our licensed plumbers issue a compliance certificate and our electricians provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety. For a unit, the owners corporation may also need to approve the work.
We are leasing out our Tullamarine house. What does the bathroom need?
Under Victoria’s rental minimum standards, a bathroom needs a washbasin, a shower or bath, and hot and cold water. Many original Tullamarine bathrooms meet that, but leaking showers, cracked tiles and poor ventilation lead to repair requests and mould. Fixing the waterproofing, fitting a ducted exhaust fan and replacing worn tapware is usually more useful for a rental than high-end finishes.
