Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Port Melbourne Homes
In Port Melbourne’s Victorian cottages, the bathroom is usually a later addition at the rear, often combined with the laundry and sitting on a timber floor. The Garden City homes have small original bathrooms, while apartments and townhouses near the beach typically have one or two compact bathrooms that are now dated.
That shapes most of our Port Melbourne bathroom renovations: rebuilding rear bathrooms with proper waterproofing over timber subfloors, separating a combined bathroom and laundry, upgrading apartment bathrooms within strict building rules, and improving ventilation in a salty coastal climate. Interior bathroom work rarely needs a planning permit from the City of Port Phillip, and in apartments we work with the owners corporation on access and approvals.

Before You Start
What to Plan For in a Port Melbourne Bathroom
Materials
Concrete Walls in Garden City
Many of the State Savings Bank houses in the Garden City estate were built from concrete blocks finished in roughcast render, not timber frames. New pipes, power points and recessed niches can’t simply go into a stud wall, so we plan chasing and wall linings around the masonry and allow for the extra time this takes.
Floors
Damp Under Old Cottages
Parts of Port Melbourne were built on low, flat land that was once swamp or lagoon, including the filled Sandridge Lagoon. Under older cottages, poor subfloor ventilation and damp can rot the bearers beneath a bathroom. We check the subfloor once the old floor is up and improve ventilation where it’s needed.
Ventilation
Ventilation Near the Bay
Homes close to the foreshore deal with salty, humid air as well as shower steam. A properly sized exhaust fan ducted outside, rather than into the roof space, keeps mould down and protects ceilings. On the outside of the house, vent covers and fixings should be a grade that resists corrosion in salt air.
Heritage
The Port Melbourne Heritage Precinct
Much of old Port Melbourne, roughly between Graham, Clark, Ingles and Pickles Streets, is in the Port Melbourne heritage precinct (HO1), and the Garden City estates are covered by HO2. Inside the bathroom, permits are rarely needed, but a new window or skylight visible from the street may need one from the City of Port Phillip.
Apartments
Beacon Cove and Bayside Apartments
Beacon Cove, built between Station Pier and Princes Pier from the late 1990s, and the apartment buildings along Beach Street all have owners corporations. Bathroom work needs written approval, lift and car park bookings, and waterproofing that protects the home below. We handle these arrangements with the building manager.
Layout
Combined Bathroom and Laundry
In many Port Melbourne cottages, the bathroom and laundry share a single room in the rear lean-to. Separating them, or tucking the laundry behind doors, gives you a proper bathroom without extending. Where the drains and the floor level allow, we can rework both spaces in one job.

Do I need a permit to renovate a bathroom in Port Melbourne?
Usually not a planning permit for work inside the house, even in a heritage precinct. If the renovation changes the outside, such as a new window or skylight that can be seen from the street, the City of Port Phillip may require one. A building permit is generally only needed for structural changes. We confirm the overlay for your street before the design is settled.
Can you renovate the bathroom in a Garden City concrete house?
Yes. The concrete block walls in many Garden City homes mean plumbing and wiring are chased into masonry or run behind new linings instead of inside a timber frame. It takes a bit more planning and time, and we include it in your fixed-price quote so there are no surprises.
What does my Beacon Cove owners corporation need before work starts?
Most owners corporations ask for a description of the work, proof of insurance and licences, set work hours, and lift or car park bookings. Some also ask for waterproofing details and an acoustic underlay under new tiles. We prepare the paperwork and keep in touch with the building manager throughout.
How long does a bathroom renovation take in Port Melbourne?
A typical bathroom renovation takes 2 to 4 weeks. Cottages can take a little longer if the subfloor is damp or the bearers need replacing, and apartments are limited by permitted work hours and lift access. We give you a timeline with your quote and tell you as soon as anything changes.
Does my Port Melbourne apartment bathroom need updating before I sell?
Many apartments and townhouses around Beacon Cove and the foreshore are now decades old, and their bathrooms show it with dated tiles, tired vanities and shower screens with worn seals. Buyers will look for signs of leaks, so fixing silicone, grout and any waterproofing issues comes first. A new vanity, tapware and lighting can freshen the room. Any work affecting waterproofing generally needs owners corporation approval before it starts.
