Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Albert Park Homes
Many Albert Park terraces have a single bathroom squeezed into the rear wing or tacked on upstairs, often renovated several times over the decades and showing its age underneath. Floors in these older homes are usually timber on stumps, so movement and leaking showers are common problems, while the apartments along Beaconsfield Parade have small bathrooms with little room to change the layout.
Albert Park bathroom renovations usually strip back to the frame and waterproof properly over timber floors, add an ensuite or second bathroom to a family terrace, fit walk-in showers and heated towel rails, and keep period features such as high ceilings and tall windows. Internal bathroom work usually doesn’t need a planning permit from the City of Port Phillip, but apartment bathrooms need owners corporation approval for access, noise and waterproofing.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Albert Park
Layout
Turning a Small Bedroom Into an Ensuite
In larger Albert Park villas, a small bedroom or dressing room beside the main bedroom can become an ensuite. These rooms often have high ceilings, ornate cornices and a fireplace, which can be kept or carefully worked around. The plumbing has to run under the floor to the drain at the rear, so we check the subfloor before design.
Heritage
Period Details in Wet Rooms
Albert Park homes often have ornate plaster or pressed metal ceilings, timber architraves and tall sash windows, even in rooms later turned into bathrooms. Moisture damages them quickly. A well-sized exhaust fan, moisture-resistant paint and careful detailing around windows protect what you want to keep, while the new fittings can still be modern.
Apartments
Walk-Up and Newer Apartment Blocks
Albert Park has mid-century walk-up flats as well as newer buildings, and in both the bathroom sits above a neighbour’s ceiling. Owners corporations usually want to see the waterproofing method, insurance and work hours before approving work. Old pipes in shared risers may also need attention. We plan the job around the building’s rules.
Access
Narrow Hallways and Stairs
Getting a bath, vanity or shower screen into an Albert Park terrace means carrying it through a narrow hallway and sometimes up a tight stair. We measure doors, turns and stair widths before ordering, and choose items that can come in pieces where needed. Rubbish leaves the same way, or through a rear lane gate where there is one.
Heating
Warm Floors in a Cold House
High ceilings and suspended timber floors make Albert Park bathrooms cold in winter. Underfloor heating under the tiles, a heated towel rail and a ceiling heat lamp combined with the exhaust fan make the room comfortable. Electric floor heating needs its own circuit, which our licensed electricians install and certify with a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Does a bathroom renovation in an Albert Park heritage home need a permit?
Internal bathroom work generally needs no planning permit from the City of Port Phillip, even within the Heritage Overlay. External changes such as a new window or a skylight visible from the street may. Homes on the Victorian Heritage Register, such as those in the St Vincent Place precinct, can need a Heritage Victoria permit for internal work too.
Can we add a second bathroom to our Albert Park terrace?
Often there is space upstairs in a two-storey terrace, or at the rear of a single-storey home where the old lean-to is being rebuilt. The key is finding a route for the waste pipe to the drain with enough fall. Space under the stairs can also take a small powder room. We check the options on site.
How long will an Albert Park bathroom renovation take?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks once work starts. In older terraces we sometimes find damaged floor joists, old wiring or lead pipes when the room is stripped, which can add time. In apartments, owners corporation work hours may stretch the timeline. We tell you about anything we find straight away.
Our Albert Park terrace is about to be sold or leased. Should the bathroom come first?
In period homes like these, a bathroom with leaks, mould or failing grout can stand out against well-kept front rooms. If time is short, focus on fixing leaks, regrouting, new silicone, a working exhaust fan and fresh tapware. A full renovation is only worth starting if the timeline allows several weeks of work plus time for selections and ordering.
