Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Prahran Homes
Bathrooms in Prahran terraces and cottages were usually added later at the back of the house or upstairs, often on old timber floors with dated tiles. Many of the area’s walk-up apartments from the 1960s and 1970s still have their original small bathrooms, with a shower over the bath and limited ventilation.
Common jobs here include replacing old bathrooms with properly waterproofed rooms suited to timber floors, adding an ensuite during a terrace renovation, reworking compact apartment bathrooms with walk-in showers and better storage, and improving exhaust. Interior bathroom work rarely needs a planning permit from the City of Stonnington, and for apartments we coordinate with the owners corporation.

Before You Start
What to Plan For in a Prahran Bathroom
Apartments
1960s and 1970s Walk-Up Flats
Many Prahran flats from this era have a small bathroom with a shower over the bath and a tiny window. Swapping the bath for a walk-in shower often gives more room. Floors are usually concrete, but waste pipes may run through the unit below, so moving fixtures can need owners corporation approval. We check the building’s plumbing first.
Layout
Bathrooms in the Rear Lean-To
In Prahran’s cottages and terraces the bathroom is often in the rear lean-to beside the laundry, with a low ceiling and a step down from the house. Rebuilding it may mean raising the floor, adding a skylight or combining it with the laundry. A skylight in a heritage overlay may need a permit, which we check before design.
Ventilation
Exhaust in Shared-Wall Houses
Terraces with neighbours on both sides have few options for windows, so bathroom moisture often has nowhere to go. A ducted exhaust fan venting through the roof or rear wall stops mould and protects older plaster. In Prahran flats the fan may need to connect to the building’s existing duct. Ventilation is planned in from the start.
Access
Laneways and Tight Access
Many Prahran cottages sit on narrow lots with no side access, though some back onto a laneway. Where there is a lane, tiles and rubbish can often move through the back gate. Without one, everything goes through the front door and hallway, so we protect floors and walls along the route and keep the footpath clear.
Heritage
Heritage Workers’ Cottages
Some Prahran streets, such as Bowen Street, are in heritage overlays for their small nineteenth century workers’ cottages, many of them weatherboard. These overlays mostly control external changes, so a bathroom rebuilt inside the cottage rarely needs a planning permit. New windows, vents or a skylight visible from the street might, so we check before design.

Can I move the shower in my Prahran apartment?
Sometimes. In a concrete-floored flat, the waste must fall to a pipe that may run through the unit below or a shared riser. Moving it a short distance is often possible, but larger changes need owners corporation approval and sometimes coring through the slab. We look at the building’s plumbing before you settle on a layout.
How do you renovate a bathroom in a Prahran terrace with no rear access?
We protect the front door, hallway and floors, and move materials and rubbish through the house in small loads. For a terrace on a busy Prahran street, deliveries are timed around peak traffic and parking restrictions. The work area is closed off with dust screens and cleaned up at the end of each day.
Do Prahran bathroom renovations need a permit?
Most internal bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from the City of Stonnington. Structural changes, such as removing a load bearing wall, can need a building permit. In a heritage overlay, new windows or skylights visible from the street may need approval, and for apartments owners corporation approval is required.
How long will my Prahran bathroom take?
On site, a bathroom here usually runs 2 to 4 weeks. Small apartment bathrooms can be at the quicker end, but owners corporation rules on hours and noise can stretch the schedule. Older terraces sometimes hide rotten floor framing or old pipes. We tell you as soon as we find anything that changes the timeline.
Is it worth renovating the bathroom before I lease my Prahran flat?
Many Prahran flats are rented, and older bathrooms often show mould, failed grout or a leaking shower over the bath. Under Victoria’s rental minimum standards, a rental bathroom must have a washbasin, a shower or a bath, and hot and cold water. Beyond that, a good exhaust fan, sound waterproofing and easy-clean surfaces help the room stay in good condition between tenancies.
