Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Cremorne Homes
Bathrooms in Cremorne’s small cottages are typically squeezed into the back of the house, sometimes behind the kitchen or in a lean-to with a step down, with old plumbing and limited ventilation. Most cottages have only one. Warehouse and newer apartments have bathrooms built around shared risers and concrete floors, which limits layout changes.
Bathroom projects in Cremorne often involve rebuilding lean-to bathrooms with new subfloors and reliable waterproofing, using wall-hung toilets and recessed storage in small rooms, improving ventilation to prevent mould, and updating apartment bathrooms without moving the drains. Interior work rarely needs a planning permit, but we confirm any external changes with the City of Yarra and coordinate apartment work with the owners corporation.

Before You Start
Planning a Bathroom Renovation in Cremorne
Floors
The Step Down to the Lean-To
Many Cremorne cottage bathrooms sit in a rear lean-to a step or two below the main house, often on a concrete slab poured over old ground or on tired timber. Levelling the floor removes a trip hazard and makes a walk-in shower possible. We check the slab, subfloor and drainage before deciding whether to raise, rebuild or keep the level.
Layout
Fitting a Bathroom Into a Narrow Cottage
Cremorne’s single-fronted cottages leave little width for a bathroom once the hallway and walls are counted. A wall-hung toilet, a shower with a fixed glass panel instead of a door and a recessed shaving cabinet save precious space. We draw the layout to scale so you can see how each choice affects movement.
Ventilation
Ventilation Between Close Walls
With neighbouring cottages and commercial buildings close by in Cremorne, bathroom windows often face a wall or can’t be opened for privacy. A ducted exhaust fan venting outside, a skylight with an opening vent or a fan linked to the light switch keeps condensation under control. We plan the exhaust route through the roof or wall early.
Asbestos
Asbestos in Older Additions
Lean-to bathrooms added to Cremorne cottages in the mid to late twentieth century may include fibre cement sheeting containing asbestos in walls, ceilings or eaves. Samples are tested before demolition starts, and a licensed removalist handles larger amounts. Identifying this early keeps the quote and program accurate.
Apartments
Apartment Risers and Approvals
In Cremorne’s warehouse conversions and newer apartment buildings, bathroom drains connect to shared risers through concrete floors, so the toilet and floor waste are usually fixed. Owners corporation approval is generally needed for waterproofing and plumbing work. We confirm the rules, book access and plan around the building’s work hours.

Do I need a planning permit for a bathroom in a Cremorne cottage?
Internal bathroom work generally doesn’t need a planning permit, even in the Cremorne heritage precinct. A new window, skylight visible from the street or changes to the outside of the lean-to may need one from the City of Yarra. We check the overlay on your property before starting design.
Can a Cremorne cottage have a second bathroom?
Sometimes. In a single-storey cottage, a small ensuite or powder room may fit by reworking the rear rooms or a hallway. An upstairs addition often makes it easier. Drainage and the heritage controls on any new roof form both affect what is possible. We look at the layout and services before suggesting options.
How long does a bathroom renovation take in Cremorne?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. In older Cremorne cottages, extra time may be needed if a subfloor, slab or drain needs replacing. Apartment work can depend on owners corporation approval and allowed work hours. We give you a written program before starting.
Is a bathroom upgrade worthwhile before leasing a Cremorne cottage?
Cremorne is close to offices along Church Street and around Swan Street, and people renting nearby often look for a well-kept, easy-care home. A bathroom with a working exhaust fan, sound waterproofing, good lighting and a reliable shower will be easier to lease and maintain than a dated lean-to with mould on the ceiling.
