Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Collingwood Homes
In Collingwood’s workers’ cottages, the bathroom is often a tight space in the rear lean-to, sometimes reached through the kitchen, with timber floors and old plumbing. Terraces may have a small bathroom upstairs. Warehouse conversions and apartments usually have bathrooms built into the original structure, with concrete slabs and shared services that limit where drains can go.
Common bathroom projects here are rebuilding lean-to bathrooms with sound subfloors and waterproofing, using wall-hung fixtures and niches to make small rooms work, adding a second bathroom or powder room where space allows, and updating apartment bathrooms around fixed plumbing. Interior bathroom work rarely needs a planning permit, but we confirm external changes with the City of Yarra and work with owners corporations on apartment projects.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Collingwood
Plumbing
Drainage in Warehouse Conversions
In a converted Collingwood factory, the bathroom often sits on a thick concrete slab with drains in fixed positions. Moving a shower or toilet may mean core drilling, a raised floor or a pumped waste system, each with its own limits and approvals. We locate the existing drains and confirm with the owners corporation before you settle on a layout.
Floors
Replacing Rotten Lean-to Floors
Lean-to bathrooms on Collingwood cottages often sit low to the ground with little airflow underneath, and decades of leaks can rot the joists. We strip back to the frame, replace damaged timber, improve subfloor ventilation and lay a stable base before waterproofing, so the new tiles do not crack as the floor moves.
Design
Making a Narrow Bathroom Work
Collingwood cottage bathrooms can be very narrow, with the door, toilet and shower competing for the same wall. A wall-hung vanity and toilet, a shower niche instead of shelves, a single fixed glass panel and large tiles with fewer grout lines make the room feel bigger. We plan every fitting to the centimetre.
Light
Daylight Without Overlooking
Many Collingwood bathrooms sit on a boundary or face a lane, where a clear window would be overlooked. A skylight, a highlight window above eye level or obscure glass lets daylight in while keeping privacy. In a Heritage Overlay, new openings at the rear are generally easier to approve than any change seen from the street.
Layout
Adding a Powder Room
In a two-storey Collingwood terrace, or a cottage with a new rear extension, a powder room under the stairs or beside the laundry can take pressure off the main bathroom. It needs a drain connection, mechanical ventilation and space for a door that opens clear of the toilet. We check the drain route before confirming the position.

Do I need owners corporation approval for a bathroom in a Collingwood warehouse apartment?
Usually, yes. Bathrooms in Collingwood’s converted warehouses and newer apartment blocks share structure and services with neighbours, so waterproofing, drilling into slabs and work hours are typically controlled by owners corporation rules. We prepare the scope, method and insurance details the committee asks for before any work starts.
Does a heritage overlay affect bathroom work in Collingwood?
Many Collingwood streets are in Heritage Overlays, such as the Collingwood Slope and Gold Street precincts, but these mainly control external changes. An internal bathroom renovation usually needs no planning permit from the City of Yarra, while a new window, skylight or roof vent visible from the street may. We check before design.
How long does a Collingwood cottage bathroom take?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. In a Collingwood cottage, access through a narrow hallway and tight street parking can slow the strip-out and deliveries, and hidden damage in old floors can add time. We plan around these from the start and tell you promptly if anything changes.
Is it worth updating the bathroom before leasing or selling in Collingwood?
A clean, leak-free bathroom matters more than a brand new one for most sales and leases. In a Collingwood cottage or apartment, regrouting, resealing the shower, replacing a worn vanity and tapware, and fixing a weak exhaust fan can lift the room. A full rebuild suits owners who plan to stay, and apartment work needs owners corporation approval.
