Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in North Melbourne Homes
Many North Melbourne terraces and cottages were built without an indoor bathroom, so the one they have now is often a later addition in the rear lean-to, sometimes reached through the laundry or kitchen. Expect tired tiles, uneven timber floors and poor ventilation. Apartments in the area usually have a single compact bathroom, with an ensuite only in the larger or newer buildings.
North Melbourne bathroom renovations often move the bathroom to a better spot within the house, add a second bathroom or ensuite where the layout allows, bring old timber subfloors up to a sound base for full waterproofing, and fit proper exhaust. Interior bathroom work rarely needs a planning permit, but in apartments we work with your owners corporation, and in heritage areas any external change goes through the City of Melbourne.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in North Melbourne
Layout
Upstairs Bathrooms in Two-Storey Terraces
Two-storey terraces in North Melbourne often have bedrooms upstairs and the only bathroom downstairs at the back. Adding a bathroom upstairs means running new waste pipes through floors and walls, often between narrow joists. We work out a pipe route that avoids cutting through ornate ceilings and cornices in the rooms below.
Neighbours
Party Walls and Shared Brickwork
Many North Melbourne terraces share a brick party wall with the house next door. Fixing heavy fittings to it, or chasing pipes into it, needs care so the neighbour’s side isn’t damaged, and some structural work near a shared wall involves notifying the neighbour. Where we can, we plan the wet wall away from shared brickwork.
Apartments
Bathrooms in Mid-Century Flats
North Melbourne has many walk-up flats from the 1950s to the 1970s, including Hotham Gardens, which the North Melbourne Heritage Review recommended for heritage protection. Bathrooms in these buildings often sit on concrete slabs over the flat below. Owners corporation approval, waterproofing to the Australian Standard and agreed work hours are all part of the plan.
Materials
Damp in Solid Brick Walls
Solid brick walls in Victorian terraces can draw moisture up from the ground, and a bathroom against them adds more. Tiling straight onto damp brick traps the problem behind new finishes. We look for rising damp and salt damage, fix the source where possible, and use a waterproofing system and ventilation that suit older masonry.
Access
Deliveries Through the Hallway
Most North Melbourne terraces have no driveway, so tiles, baths and rubbish go through the front door and hallway or through a rear laneway gate. Parking near Errol Street is tight, and a skip bin on the road may need a City of Melbourne permit. We plan deliveries and rubbish removal, and protect hallway floors, before work starts.

Is a planning permit needed for a bathroom in a North Melbourne heritage terrace?
Usually not for internal work. Large parts of North Melbourne are in the North & West Melbourne heritage precinct, but the controls there mainly cover external changes. A new window, skylight or vent visible from the street may need a permit from the City of Melbourne. We check what applies to your property before design.
Can we fit a second bathroom in a single-fronted terrace?
Often there is room for a small ensuite or shower room upstairs, or a powder room under the stairs. The challenge in a narrow North Melbourne terrace is finding a route for the waste pipes with enough fall to the drain. We look at the stairs, floor framing and rear wall before suggesting a spot.
What does the owners corporation need before I renovate my apartment bathroom?
Most require written approval, details of the work and the contractor’s insurance before work starts, and some set work hours, lift protection and rules on noise. In older North Melbourne flats the bathroom floor may sit over a neighbour’s ceiling, so the waterproofing method is often reviewed closely. We prepare and submit the paperwork with you.
Before leasing out a North Melbourne terrace or apartment, what does the bathroom need?
Under Victoria’s rental minimum standards, the bathroom must have a washbasin, a shower or bath, and hot and cold water. Beyond the minimum, tenants look for good ventilation and no mould, which can be a challenge in older North Melbourne terraces. Fixing leaks, regrouting, adding an exhaust fan and replacing tired fittings is usually more practical than a full renovation.
