Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom

“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”

Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful

“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”

Wow! Now that's a bathroom

“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”

Renovating Bathrooms in Carlton Homes

In Carlton’s terraces and cottages, the bathroom is often in the rear lean-to, or up a narrow stair in two-storey terraces, with uneven timber floors, minimal ventilation and old pipework. Many still have a single bathroom shared by the whole household. Apartments and student accommodation near the University of Melbourne usually have small bathrooms with fixed plumbing points and shared building services.

That shapes most Carlton bathroom renovations: rebuilding lean-to bathrooms with new subfloors and proper waterproofing, adding a second bathroom upstairs in two-storey terraces, improving ventilation in tight spaces, and updating apartment bathrooms without moving key plumbing. Interior work doesn’t usually need a planning permit, but Carlton’s Heritage Overlays mean we check any external changes with the City of Melbourne, and we work with owners corporations in apartments.

What to Plan For in a Carlton Bathroom

  1. Plumbing

    Upstairs Bathrooms in Tall Terraces

Carlton’s two and three storey terraces, such as those along Drummond Street, often have bedrooms on the upper floors and a single bathroom at the back of the ground floor. Adding a bathroom upstairs means finding a route for waste pipes down through the house, usually beside a chimney breast or inside a new wall. We work out that pipe route before settling the layout.

  2. Waterproofing

    Building Over Rear Wing Floors

Bathrooms in Carlton’s rear wings and lean-tos usually sit on timber floors that were never built for a wet room. Old boards can flex, and stumps may be damp or sinking after more than a century. We check the subfloor, replace or strengthen framing where needed and waterproof to the Australian Standard, so the membrane and tiles have a stable base.

  3. Heritage

    Skylights in the HO1 Precinct

Carlton’s HO1 precinct is the oldest heritage precinct in the City of Melbourne, and its controls focus mainly on what can be seen from the street. A skylight or new window in a rear lean-to roof is an external change, so a planning permit may be needed. Low-profile skylights on roof slopes hidden from the street are usually the simplest path.

  4. Apartments

    Student and Investor Apartments

Many apartments near the University of Melbourne and RMIT are compact one and two bedroom units, often rented to students. Bathrooms are usually small rooms or pods with fixed risers, so moving the shower or toilet very far is rarely possible. We plan within the existing waste points and arrange work hours, lift use and approvals through the owners corporation.

  5. Asbestos

    Asbestos in Earlier Updates

Many Carlton terraces had their bathrooms rebuilt in the mid twentieth century, and lean-tos or wall linings from before 1990 can contain asbestos cement sheeting. Anything suspicious is sampled before demolition, and larger amounts must be taken out by a licensed asbestos removalist. We allow for testing in the written quote so it doesn’t hold up the job once work starts.

  6. Access

    Getting Materials to the Back

Many Carlton terraces have no side path, so tiles, a new bath and demolition waste all travel along the front hallway, past original plaster, cornices and floorboards. Where a rear lane gives access, we use it instead. We protect the hallway, plan deliveries around tight street parking and keep the work area contained and cleaned up each day.

FAQ

Bathroom Renovations Carlton: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Which council approves bathroom work in Carlton, and what about Carlton North?

Carlton is in the City of Melbourne. Neighbouring Carlton North is split between two councils, with much of it in the City of Yarra, so check your rates notice or VicPlan if you are near the border. Interior bathroom work usually needs no planning permit in either council, and our licensed plumbers provide a compliance certificate for the plumbing.

Can I add an ensuite to a Carlton terrace?

Often, yes. In a two-storey terrace the usual spot is a small rear bedroom or part of the upstairs landing, with waste pipes run down to ground level. In a single-storey cottage, an ensuite usually comes as part of a rear extension. We look at the floor framing, the pipe route and any heritage controls before suggesting where it could go.

How long will we be without a bathroom in our Carlton terrace?

A typical bathroom here takes 2 to 4 weeks. Rebuilding a rear lean-to floor or running new pipes through a two-storey terrace can add time. If it is your only bathroom, we talk through the timing with you before work starts, so you can make arrangements, and we keep you updated on progress as each stage is finished.

Should I update the bathroom before leasing my Carlton property to students?

Carlton has one of the highest concentrations of university students in Australia, so many terraces and apartments are rented by students sharing one bathroom. A durable, easy-to-clean room matters more than designer finishes: a strong exhaust fan, a reliable shower, sound waterproofing and enough storage. Fixing leaks and replacing tired grout or tapware is often enough. A second toilet can help in a shared terrace.
