Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Parkville Homes
Bathrooms in Parkville’s Victorian terraces were mostly added well after the houses were built, often in a rear wing or upstairs in what was once a small bedroom. Many have dated tiles, aged plumbing and timber floors that need careful work, while the townhouses and apartments in Parkville Gardens usually have plainer, compact bathrooms.
Common bathroom projects here are rebuilding bathrooms within old structures with proper waterproofing over timber floors, adding an ensuite to the main bedroom, matching traditional details such as tiles and fixtures to the home’s period, and improving ventilation. Interior bathroom work rarely needs a planning permit, but heritage controls cover much of Parkville’s older housing and the City of Melbourne may need to approve external changes.

Before You Start
Planning a Bathroom in a Parkville Home
Structure
Bathrooms on the Upper Floor
In a two-storey Parkville terrace, an upstairs bathroom often sits on timber joists above a formal room with an ornate plaster ceiling. The floor has to be stiff enough for tiles and a bath, and the waterproofing must be thorough to protect the ceiling below. We check the joists and plan the drain route before you choose fixtures.
Heritage
Period Details That Suit the House
Parkville’s Victorian terraces often have tall ceilings, deep skirtings and timber architraves, and a bathroom that ignores them can feel out of place. Patterned floor tiles, a pedestal basin or freestanding bath, and exposed taps in a period finish can be combined with modern waterproofing, good lighting and a walk-in shower.
Ventilation
Steam in High-Ceilinged Rooms
High ceilings in Parkville homes mean a lot of air to clear, and many bathrooms rely on an old window that stays shut in winter. A ducted exhaust fan sized for the room, venting to a discreet outlet at the rear, removes steam without changing the street view. We avoid cutting new vents into visible facades.
Plumbing
Pipes in Solid Brick Walls
Parkville terraces often have solid brick internal walls, so new pipework cannot simply be hidden in a stud wall. We chase pipes carefully, build a false wall or ledge where needed, and check old cast iron and galvanised pipes for corrosion. Our licensed plumbers issue a plumbing compliance certificate when the job is complete.
Apartments
Apartments in Parkville Gardens
Some Parkville Gardens apartments are in converted red brick hospital pavilions on the Victorian Heritage Register, while others are in newer buildings. Either way, bathroom work needs owners corporation approval and must protect the units below. In the heritage pavilions, a permit from Heritage Victoria may also be needed for some changes, so we check before design.

Can I add an ensuite in my Parkville terrace?
Often, yes. In a two-storey Parkville terrace, a small back bedroom or part of a large front bedroom can become an ensuite, with drainage run through the floor to the rear. We protect the ornate ceilings below and avoid changes to the front of the house. Interior work like this usually needs no planning permit.
Which council looks after my Parkville bathroom renovation?
Most of Parkville is in the City of Melbourne, while a small northern section near Brunswick falls in the City of Merri-bek. Interior bathroom work rarely needs a planning permit from either, though building and plumbing regulations still apply. We check your address, any heritage overlay and the building rules before work starts.
How do you protect period features during a Parkville bathroom renovation?
We cover floors and stair treads, seal doorways to keep dust out of formal rooms, and take care with plaster cornices and ceiling roses below an upstairs bathroom. Original features in the bathroom itself, such as a fireplace surround or timber window in a Parkville terrace, can often be kept and worked around.
Should I renovate the bathroom before selling or leasing my Parkville home?
In Parkville’s period homes, a dated or leaking bathroom can stand out against the original detail elsewhere in the house. Repairing leaks and cracked tiles, regrouting, replacing worn tapware and adding a good exhaust fan may be enough to present it well. A complete period-style bathroom is a larger job that suits owners staying on.
