Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom

Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful

“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”

Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”

Renovating Bathrooms in Toorak Homes

Toorak’s housing ranges from Victorian and Edwardian mansions to interwar Georgian revival homes, postwar villas and luxury apartments near Toorak Road. Bathrooms in these homes are often well built but dated, with marble or terrazzo from earlier renovations, multiple bathrooms of varying age, and ensuites that no longer match the scale of the main bedroom.

Owners here usually ask for high-end remodels of main bathrooms and ensuites, natural stone and custom joinery, heated floors and towel rails, walk-in showers and freestanding baths, and careful upgrades to old plumbing behind the walls. Most bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit, but apartment work goes through your owners corporation, and we check any heritage controls with the City of Stonnington.

Before You Start

Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Toorak

  1. Planning

    Several Bathrooms at Once

Larger Toorak homes often have four or more bathrooms of different ages, from an original tiled room to a 1990s ensuite. Renovating them together keeps tapware, tiles and joinery consistent and means one period of disruption instead of several. If you would rather stage the work, we plan the order so the household always has a working shower.

  2. Materials

    Natural Stone and Large Slabs

Marble and other natural stone are common in Toorak bathrooms, often as large slabs on walls and floors. Stone is heavy, needs sealing, and slab sizes decide whether pieces can be carried up a staircase or fitted into a lift. We confirm the floor structure can take the weight and plan how each slab reaches the room before anything is ordered.

  3. Heating

    Heated Floors and Towel Rails

In-floor heating and heated towel rails suit the large, high-ceilinged bathrooms in Toorak’s period and interwar homes. Electric mats sit under the tiles, while hydronic systems can connect to an existing boiler if the house has one. Each needs a dedicated circuit or plumbing, so we plan them at the design stage and include them in the fixed quote.

  4. Apartments

    Art Deco and Mansion Flats

Interwar flats in Toorak, such as Trawalla Court on Lascelles Avenue from 1931, are in heritage overlays, and their owners corporations often have strict rules on internal work, hours and noise. Original tiles and fittings inside may be worth keeping. We obtain owners corporation approval for plumbing and waterproofing before any work starts.

  5. Plumbing

    Water Pressure and Hot Water

Large rain showers, wall jets and a freestanding bath need good water pressure and plenty of hot water at the same time. Older Toorak homes may have undersized pipes or an ageing hot water system that cannot keep up. Our licensed plumbers check flow and capacity early, so the fittings you choose will actually perform in your home.

  6. Access

    Upstairs Bathrooms and Protection

Many Toorak bathrooms are upstairs, reached by a grand staircase with polished timber and joinery that must not be marked. We protect stairs, floors and walls along the route, contain the work area and clean up each day. Tiles, stone and rubbish are moved with care, and in some homes through a secondary stair or service entry.

FAQ

Bathroom Renovations Toorak: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Do bathroom renovations in Toorak need council approval?

Internal bathroom work generally doesn’t need a planning permit from the City of Stonnington, even in a heritage overlay. A few listed places have internal controls, and new windows, skylights or vents visible from the street may need approval. Apartments need owners corporation approval. We check the controls for your property before design starts.

Can you match the existing marble in our Toorak home?

Sometimes. Natural stone varies between quarries and batches, so an exact match for marble laid decades ago is rarely possible. We can look for a close match, or design the new bathroom so it sits comfortably alongside the old stone rather than copying it. We bring samples and check them in your home’s light.

How long will a bathroom renovation take in our Toorak home?

Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks on site. Large ensuites with natural stone, custom joinery or in-floor heating can take longer, mainly because of material lead times. We order long lead items early and give you a written schedule, so the room isn’t left unfinished while you wait for a vanity or a slab.

Can a dated ensuite be made larger in a Toorak home?

Usually. In large period and interwar homes the space often comes from a walk-in robe, a dressing room or a little-used bedroom next door. Plumbing access under a timber floor or through a concrete slab, and the position of structural walls, decide what is practical. We assess both when we first visit.

Should I update bathrooms before selling or leasing my Toorak home?

Buyers and tenants in Toorak often look closely at finishes, so a bathroom with dated fittings, stained grout or a leaking shower can stand out. Repairing leaks and regrouting come first. Replacing tapware, vanities and lighting can lift a room without major work, while a full remodel needs enough lead time for stone and joinery to arrive.
