Kitchen and outdoor renovations
“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Outdoor Living in Aberfeldie Homes
Aberfeldie has some of the larger backyards this close to the city, many with established trees and room for lawn, play space or a pool. Towards the Maribyrnong River the ground slopes, so outdoor areas often sit well above or below the house, and some homes have views across the valley that are worth opening up to.
Popular outdoor projects include raised or multi-level decks that handle the slope, covered alfresco areas with fans and lighting, pergolas joined to the rear of the house and decking around pools with compliant barriers. Raised decks and many covered structures need a building permit, and we confirm with the City of Moonee Valley whether planning approval also applies.

Before You Start
Planning a Deck or Outdoor Area in Aberfeldie
Slope
Multi-Level Decks on the Slope
On Aberfeldie blocks that fall towards the river, a deck level with the house can sit well above the garden at its outer edge. Stepping the deck down in two or three levels keeps heights lower, creates separate dining and lounging areas and links better with the lawn. Decks above 800 mm generally need a building permit and balustrades.
Pools
Decking Around a Pool
Many larger Aberfeldie backyards have, or have room for, a pool. Decking around it has to work with the pool barrier, so steps, planters and benches can’t create climbing points near the fence. Pool and spa barriers in Victoria must be registered with council and inspected. We design the deck and the barrier together.
Trees
Deck Footings Near Large Trees
Established trees in Aberfeldie gardens give shade, but their roots spread well beyond the canopy. Carefully placed footings, or a deck built on adjustable pedestals, reduce root damage. If a tree is on Moonee Valley’s Significant Tree Register, works within its protection zone generally need a permit, which we check before design.
Heritage
Front Verandahs in Heritage Precincts
In the Aberfeldie Street and Waverley Street precinct, front verandahs and fences are part of the streetscape. Rebuilding a verandah, or adding a new structure that can be seen from the street, may need a planning permit from the City of Moonee Valley. We match posts, frieze and flooring to the era of the house.
Outdoor
Views Across the Valley
Some Aberfeldie homes on higher ground near the river look across the Maribyrnong valley. Glass or slim wire balustrades keep the view while meeting safety requirements, and a roof set high enough frames the outlook rather than blocking it. We site the deck to make the most of the view while respecting neighbours’ privacy.
Shade
Covered Alfresco Comfort
A roofed alfresco with a ceiling fan, lighting and an outdoor heater makes an Aberfeldie deck usable from spring to late autumn. Insulated roof panels reduce heat and the noise of rain. Our licensed electricians install the fan, lights and outdoor power points and provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the work.

Do I need a permit for a raised deck in Aberfeldie?
A deck more than 800 mm above ground at any point, or attached to the house, generally needs a building permit, which is common on Aberfeldie’s sloping blocks. Planning approval from the City of Moonee Valley may also be needed in a heritage precinct or flood overlay. We confirm the requirements before construction starts.
Can we build a deck near a significant tree?
Often, with care. If a tree on your Aberfeldie property is on Moonee Valley’s Significant Tree Register, a permit is generally needed for works in its protection zone, and an arborist’s report may be requested. Pedestal footings and a raised deck can reduce root damage. We check the register before design.
What decking suits Aberfeldie’s shaded gardens?
In shady parts of a garden, timber can stay damp and grow mould, so good airflow beneath the deck and boards spaced for drainage matter. Composite boards resist moisture well, while durable hardwoods such as spotted gum perform well with regular oiling. We bring samples so you can compare them in your own Aberfeldie garden.
Can a pergola join onto our bungalow?
Usually, but bungalow eaves and fascias weren’t built to carry extra roof loads, so a new beam or a freestanding frame next to the house may be needed. In an Aberfeldie heritage precinct, a pergola visible from the street may need a planning permit. We check the roof structure and the controls before design.
Will improving the outdoor area help when selling our Aberfeldie home?
Aberfeldie’s larger backyards are often a reason people look in the suburb, so a garden that looks usable helps. Repairing or oiling an existing deck, fixing balustrades and steps, cleaning paving and trimming trees are quick improvements. A new multi-level deck or alfresco takes longer and needs permits, so it suits owners staying on.
