Kitchen and outdoor renovations
“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”
Outstanding Customer Service
“Absolute pleasure dealing with Tony and his team. His customer service was without a doubt, outstanding! Punctual, always on time, workmanship could not be faulted. He delivered on what he promised and on time. We would not hesitate recommending his services!”
Outdoor Living in Clifton Hill Homes
Most Clifton Hill homes have a narrow backyard or courtyard, often enclosed by brick walls and opening onto a rear lane, with the Merri Creek trail and Darling Gardens nearby for green space. Many houses sit on stumps with steps down from the back door. Neighbours are close on both sides, so shade, privacy and keeping enough garden space all need to be balanced.
That shapes most Clifton Hill outdoor projects: building low decks that step straight out from the kitchen, adding pergolas and shade over small courtyards, building in seating and storage where space is tight, and using screening to soften boundary walls. Heritage Overlays across the suburb mean decks and roofed structures can need planning and building permits, so we check requirements with the City of Yarra before we start.

Before You Start
Planning a Deck or Courtyard in Clifton Hill
Design
Decking at Floor Level
Many Clifton Hill houses sit on stumps, with the back door well above the yard. A deck built to the kitchen floor level replaces the steps and creates an outdoor room. If the deck is attached to the house or more than 800 mm above the ground, a building permit is generally needed, and balustrades are required on higher decks.
Structure
Fixing to Old Walls
Fixing a deck to a weatherboard or old brick rear wall needs care. Ledgers must be flashed so water doesn’t get behind the cladding, and old walls may not take the load, so a freestanding deck on its own footings is often the better choice. We inspect the rear wall and stumps of your Clifton Hill house before deciding how to support it.
Heritage
Pergolas in HO316 and HO317
Almost all of Clifton Hill is in Heritage Overlay precincts HO316 and HO317, so a pergola, verandah or deck visible from the street may need a planning permit from the City of Yarra. Structures in rear yards that can’t be seen from the street often face fewer heritage hurdles. We confirm the requirements for your property before design.
Shade
Shade for Hot Paved Yards
Small Clifton Hill yards with brick walls and paving hold heat on summer afternoons. An open pergola with a deciduous vine gives summer shade and lets winter sun through, while a retractable awning or louvred roof gives more control. We position posts to keep the yard usable and clear of drains, meters and other services.
Materials
Decking That Suits a Period Home
Hardwood decking in a natural or stained finish sits comfortably against Victorian brick or weatherboard, while composite boards need less upkeep. For Clifton Hill’s heritage streets, simple balustrades in timber or slim steel suit the house better than heavy framed glass. We bring samples so you can see them against your own walls before choosing.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Clifton Hill?
A deck attached to the house or more than 800 mm above the ground generally needs a building permit. Because Clifton Hill is almost entirely within heritage precincts, the City of Yarra may also need to approve a deck, pergola or verandah that is visible from the street. A low freestanding deck in the backyard usually has fewer requirements.
Can a deck replace the back steps on our Clifton Hill house?
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons to build one. A deck at floor level with a few wide steps down to the yard is safer and easier to use than narrow original steps. We design the steps and any balustrade to meet the building regulations for the deck’s height above the ground.
Will a new deck cause damp under our Clifton Hill house?
It can if it blocks the subfloor vents or traps water against the wall. We keep the vents in the rear wall clear, leave a gap between the deck and the house, and make sure the ground underneath drains away. That protects the old stumps and floor framing of the house as well as the new deck.
Is building a deck worthwhile before selling or leasing in Clifton Hill?
If the back door opens onto steep steps or broken paving, a simple deck can make the yard feel like part of the house, which buyers and tenants tend to appreciate in a suburb of small yards. Keep the design simple and well finished, and check heritage permit needs early so the work is complete before photos and inspections.
