Kitchen and outdoor renovations
“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Outdoor Living in Carlton Homes
Outdoor space in Carlton is usually a small rear courtyard behind a terrace or cottage, boxed in by brick walls and often reached from a lane at the back. Apartments rely on balconies and some rooftop terraces. These spaces are close to neighbours, so privacy, shade and drainage all matter more than size.
That shapes most Carlton outdoor projects: building low decks in courtyards that flow straight from the kitchen, adding pergolas or retractable shade over small spaces, improving drainage and screening for privacy, and working carefully on balconies and terraces where weight and waterproofing matter. Heritage Overlays across Carlton mean decks and roofed structures can need planning and building permits, so we confirm requirements with the City of Melbourne first.

Before You Start
Planning a Courtyard or Deck in Carlton
Design
Low Decks Off the Kitchen
Most Carlton courtyards are small and paved, often a step or two down from the rear wing. A low timber or composite deck that meets the kitchen floor level removes the step and makes the space feel larger. A low deck that is not attached to the house may not need a building permit, but we confirm this before work starts.
Shade
Shade Between High Walls
Carlton courtyards are often shaded by neighbouring walls for much of the day, yet can still trap heat in summer. A retractable awning, shade sail or louvred pergola lets you control sun and shade through the year. In a heritage precinct, roofed structures visible from the street may need a planning permit, so we keep them low and at the rear.
Apartments
Balconies and Rooftop Terraces
Apartment balconies and rooftop terraces in Carlton often sit above living space, so the existing waterproofing membrane must stay intact. Pedestal decking or tiles on adjustable supports keep drainage working and avoid fixing through the membrane. Weight limits, building rules and owners corporation approval all apply, and we check each of them before materials are ordered.
Drainage
Courtyard Drainage
Old Carlton courtyards often slope toward the house or drain to a single small grate. Building a deck over poor drainage hides the problem until boards rot or water reaches the rear wall and subfloor. We check the falls and the stormwater connection first, and add a grated drain at the back door where it is needed.
Privacy
Privacy From Upper Windows
In Carlton, two and three storey terraces next door can look straight down into your courtyard. Batten screens, a pergola with angled slats or climbing plants on wires can block those views while letting light through. Screens on the boundary may be treated like fencing, with height limits, so we confirm the rules with the City of Melbourne.
Access
Using the Rear Lane
Many Carlton terraces back onto bluestone laneways, which makes it easier to bring decking, framing and waste through a rear gate. Where there is no lane, materials come through the house, so we protect floors and plan smaller loads. Some lanes are narrow or shared, so we coordinate deliveries with neighbours and keep the lane clear.

Do I need a permit for a pergola in my Carlton courtyard?
It depends on size, height, roofing and location. Pergolas attached to the house or with a solid roof generally need a building permit, and in a Heritage Overlay a structure visible from the street may need a planning permit from the City of Melbourne. A small open pergola at the rear often has fewer requirements. We confirm this before building.
Can you build a deck on our Carlton apartment balcony?
Usually, if the owners corporation agrees and the balcony can take the weight. We use adjustable pedestals so the deck sits above the membrane without screws through it, and leave access to the drains for cleaning. Some buildings have rules about materials and their fire performance, so we check the building’s requirements first.
What decking suits a shaded Carlton courtyard?
Shaded courtyards stay damp longer, so boards can grow mould and become slippery. Composite boards, or a dense hardwood with gaps between boards and good airflow underneath, usually perform better in these conditions. We raise the frame clear of the paving and allow ventilation, so the deck dries out between rain.
Should I spruce up my Carlton courtyard before leasing or selling?
In a terrace with no garden, the courtyard is the only outdoor space, so buyers and tenants notice it. Fixing broken paving, clearing drains, repairing fences and adding simple shade or a low deck can make it usable. Keep it low maintenance, especially for tenants. Larger roofed structures may need permits in Carlton’s heritage precinct, so allow time for them.
