Kitchen and outdoor renovations
“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”
Outstanding Customer Service
“Absolute pleasure dealing with Tony and his team. His customer service was without a doubt, outstanding! Punctual, always on time, workmanship could not be faulted. He delivered on what he promised and on time. We would not hesitate recommending his services!”
Outdoor Living in North Melbourne Homes
Outdoor space is precious in North Melbourne. Most terraces and cottages have a small paved courtyard at the back, often hemmed in by brick walls and a rear lane, and some have a narrow side passage. Apartments rely on balconies, and a few homes have a flat roof or rear extension that could carry a small terrace.
North Melbourne outdoor projects tend to be low timber or composite decks that step straight out from the kitchen, pergolas or louvred roofs for shade and privacy from overlooking windows, planting and screening along boundary walls, and better use of side passages. Decks and pergolas can need a building permit, and in heritage areas the City of Melbourne may need to approve visible structures, so we confirm this before we start.

Planning an Outdoor Space in North Melbourne
Privacy
Overlooking From Apartments
Courtyards near North Melbourne’s apartment buildings, public housing towers and new developments can be overlooked from several storeys up. A pergola with operable louvres, a shade sail or a tree canopy blocks views from above in a way that side screens can’t. We look at sightlines from neighbouring windows at the first visit.
Structure
Terraces on Flat-Roofed Additions
Some North Melbourne terraces have a flat-roofed rear addition that owners would like to use as an outdoor terrace. The roof structure, waterproofing and drainage must be designed for it, balustrades must comply and overlooking rules apply. In a heritage precinct it also needs to sit discreetly. An engineer’s check of the existing structure comes first.
Materials
Decking or Paving in Small Courtyards
In a small North Melbourne courtyard, a deck level with the kitchen floor makes the space feel bigger, but where it meets brick walls, ventilation and drainage underneath matter. Bluestone or brick paving can suit a Victorian terrace better and copes with shade. We consider how the surface meets walls, drains and the laneway gate.
Permits
Structures in the Heritage Precinct
Rear decks and pergolas behind a terrace are usually hidden from the street, but on corner blocks or homes facing a laneway or park they may be seen. In a heritage precinct, visible structures can need a planning permit from the City of Melbourne, and most pergolas and raised decks need a building permit. We check both before design.
Outdoor
Greening Hard Courtyards
North Melbourne courtyards are often fully paved and enclosed by brick, so they heat up and drain poorly. Built-in planter boxes, climbers on wires and a small tree in a raised bed soften the space and provide shade. Planters built against walls need waterproofing so they don’t push damp into old brickwork.

Can I build a deck in a North Melbourne courtyard surrounded by brick walls?
Yes. A low deck can usually run close to boundary walls, with a small gap and good drainage so water doesn’t sit against the brickwork. Where the deck is under 800 mm high and not attached to the house, a building permit may not be needed, but we confirm this along with any heritage requirements.
Can I put a pergola on a terrace that backs onto a laneway?
Usually, but a pergola on or near a laneway boundary has to meet height and siting rules and must not block access. If it can be seen from the laneway in a heritage precinct, the City of Melbourne may assess it. Rear gates, bins and any parking are planned at the same time so the laneway still works for you.
Will a deck make my North Melbourne courtyard feel bigger?
Often it does, especially when the deck sits level with the kitchen floor and the doors open fully, so the indoor and outdoor floors read as one space. Built-in seating along a wall saves room compared with loose furniture. In very small courtyards, keeping part of the area for planting stops it feeling boxed in.
Should I tidy the courtyard before selling or leasing my North Melbourne terrace?
Yes, it is one of the simpler improvements. For many North Melbourne terraces the courtyard is the only private outdoor area, so cracked pavers, rotting decking and damp walls get noticed at inspections. Cleaning brickwork, replacing worn boards, fixing drainage and adding planting usually achieve more than a large new structure that needs permits and time.
