Outstanding Service
“Tony and Milan redid my tired old-looking floor and skirting in the whole kitchen area. Their attention to detail, prompt, friendly, value for money and service is A+. It's good to see that they take your job as if it's their own home they are renovating. LOVE YOUR WORK GUYS AND THANK YOU. I highly recommend.”
Kitchen and outdoor renovations
“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Renovating Kitchens in Aberfeldie Homes
Aberfeldie is a quiet pocket above the Maribyrnong River, with interwar bungalows, solid postwar brick homes and a growing number of new double-storey houses on generous blocks. In the older homes, the kitchen is usually a separate room at the back with a small meals area, several doors and a window over the sink, rather than a real link to the garden.
Kitchen projects here usually remove walls to join the kitchen, dining and family areas, add a butler’s pantry or walk-in storage, open the back wall to a deck or alfresco area and update old wiring and plumbing. Most interior kitchen work doesn’t need a planning permit, and where the outside of the house changes we check with the City of Moonee Valley whether approval is needed.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Kitchen in Aberfeldie
Layout
Kitchen in the Rear Extension
In many Aberfeldie bungalows the best place for a new kitchen is in a rear extension facing the garden, with the old kitchen becoming a dining room, pantry or laundry. This lets the new kitchen be built while the old one stays in use for most of the job. We plan services in the new section before the slab or floor goes in.
Storage
Room for a Butler’s Pantry
Aberfeldie’s wider blocks often allow an extension with space for a butler’s pantry behind the main kitchen. It can hold a second sink, small appliances and bulk storage, keeping the main bench clear for cooking and entertaining. It needs its own ventilation, lighting and power points, which we plan together with the main kitchen.
Light
Light on South-Facing Blocks
Where an Aberfeldie garden faces south towards the river, a kitchen at the back of the house can miss out on direct sun. Highlight windows, skylights or a raised clerestory roof can bring northern light in over the top of the house. We look at the orientation of your block before setting the roof and window design.
Electrical
Wiring in Interwar Homes
Interwar Aberfeldie homes may have wiring that has been patched over many decades, with old fuses and few circuits. A new kitchen needs dedicated circuits for the oven, cooktop and dishwasher, and is a sensible time to upgrade the switchboard with safety switches. Our licensed electricians issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety at the end.
Heritage
Period Details to Keep
High ceilings, picture rails, leadlight windows and fireplaces in an Aberfeldie bungalow can stay even when the kitchen is modernised. Cabinetry that stops short of the cornice, a timber or stone benchtop and joinery in proportion with the room help the kitchen sit comfortably in the house. Heritage controls mainly apply to the outside.

Do I need a permit to open up my Aberfeldie kitchen?
Removing a load-bearing wall generally needs a building permit and an engineer’s design for the new beam. Interior changes usually don’t need a planning permit, even in a heritage precinct, unless internal controls apply to your property. If the kitchen moves into a new extension, the extension may need planning approval from the City of Moonee Valley.
Can we live at home while our Aberfeldie kitchen is renovated?
Usually. If the new kitchen is in an extension, the old one can often stay in use until near the end. For a kitchen renovated in place, the main disruption falls between removing the old cabinets and fitting the benchtops. We give you a written schedule and suggest where a temporary setup could go in your house.
Is induction or gas better for our Aberfeldie kitchen?
Both work well. Induction is fast, easy to clean and needs a dedicated circuit, which may mean a switchboard upgrade in an older Aberfeldie home. If you choose gas, a licensed gasfitter connects it and the rangehood should be ducted outside. We discuss which suits your cooking and the rest of the house.
How do we keep the kitchen in style with a bungalow?
Shaker-style or simple panel doors, a timber or honed stone benchtop, a tiled splashback and brass or nickel tapware suit an Aberfeldie bungalow. In a modern rear extension, the kitchen can be more contemporary while still using materials that link back to the original house. We show you samples together so the choices work as a set.
Should we renovate the kitchen before listing our Aberfeldie home?
A dated kitchen in a period home doesn’t have to be fully replaced before a sale. New benchtops, painted doors, updated handles and appliances and better lighting can make it feel fresh within a short program. A full redesign or extension is better left to owners planning to live with it, as it involves more time and possibly permits.
