Kitchen and outdoor renovations
“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Renovating Kitchens in Strathmore Homes
Strathmore is a quiet, established suburb beside the Moonee Ponds Creek with interwar bungalows and solid postwar brick homes on generous blocks, alongside newer double-storey houses and townhouses. Kitchens in the older homes are typically separate rooms at the back, with a meals area, laminate benches, overhead cupboards and a door rather than a wide opening to the garden.
Typical kitchen projects here include removing walls to join kitchen, meals and family areas, adding island benches and walk-in pantries, upgrading lighting and appliances, and installing sliding doors to a rear deck or alfresco. Most interior kitchen work doesn’t need a planning permit, though removing load-bearing walls needs a building permit, and we check any overlays with the City of Moonee Valley first.

Before You Start
Planning a Kitchen Renovation in Strathmore
Structure
Opening the Back of the House
In Strathmore’s postwar brick homes the kitchen, meals area and laundry are often separate rooms across the back of the house. Removing the walls between them can create one large space, but brick or loadbearing internal walls need an engineer’s design and a building permit. We inspect the roof and wall structure before drawing a layout.
Heritage
Period Details in Interwar Homes
Interwar Strathmore bungalows often have leadlight windows, picture rails, decorative ceilings and timber joinery that are worth keeping. A new kitchen can respect these with shaker or panelled doors, a traditional profile benchtop edge and lighting that does not cut into ornate plaster. Heritage controls mainly apply to external changes.
Outdoor
Doors to a Deep Backyard
Strathmore’s generous rear gardens are often hidden behind a small kitchen window and a back door. Wide sliding or stacking doors from the kitchen and meals area connect the room to a deck or paved alfresco, and they can bring northern light into the house where the garden faces north. We plan the doors and outdoor level together.
Light
Daylight in a Deep Floor Plan
Kitchens in the middle of a Strathmore house can be dark, particularly after a rear extension is added beyond them. Skylights, a highlight window above the cabinetry or a glazed section in the extension roof can bring daylight back in. Pendant lights and under-cabinet LEDs then fill in for cooking at night.
Electrical
Circuits for Modern Appliances
Older Strathmore homes are often still running their original or early switchboards. Wall ovens, induction cooktops, dishwashers and integrated fridges add load that may require switchboard upgrades and new circuits. Our licensed electricians assess the board at the start and provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety when the kitchen is complete.
Storage
A Butler’s Pantry
Some larger Strathmore homes have room for a butler’s pantry behind the main kitchen, often in space taken from the old laundry or a back porch. It can house a second sink, appliances and open shelves so the main kitchen stays clear. Ventilation and lighting need to be planned as well, since these rooms are often windowless.

Do I need a planning permit for a new kitchen in Strathmore?
Generally not if the work is inside the existing house. Removing a loadbearing wall needs a building permit, and if the kitchen is part of an extension, a planning permit may apply where the property is in a Heritage Overlay or a flood overlay near Moonee Ponds Creek. We check the property report before the design is finalised.
Can the kitchen be moved to the back of our Strathmore house?
Often, yes. Moving the kitchen next to the garden usually means relocating plumbing, drainage, gas and electrical. On timber floors this is generally simpler than in a slab home because the pipes can run underneath. We check drainage falls and access before recommending a new position.
Will a modern kitchen suit our interwar Strathmore bungalow?
It can. Many owners choose a clean, simple kitchen that sits comfortably with original features such as timber floors, leadlight and decorative ceilings. Materials like timber, natural stone looks and painted cabinetry help it feel at home in a period house. We discuss the style with you at the start.
Should we renovate our Strathmore kitchen before selling?
A full new kitchen is rarely needed before a sale. Strathmore buyers often look at original homes expecting to make changes. Fixing worn benchtops, broken drawers and water damage, repainting and updating handles and lighting usually present the room well. A new kitchen makes more sense if you plan to stay and enjoy it for a few years.
