Kitchen and outdoor renovations

“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Renovating Kitchens in Glenroy Homes

Glenroy grew quickly in the postwar years, so its streets are largely made up of brick veneer and weatherboard family homes on wide blocks, with units and townhouses now replacing some of the originals. Kitchens in the older houses are usually a separate room with a meals area, original cupboards and a window over the sink rather than doors to the yard.

Common Glenroy kitchen work includes opening closed kitchens to the living areas, adding islands and pantry storage, replacing original cabinetry and creating a better link to the backyard. Our Glenroy kitchen project shows what a compact corner layout can do. Internal kitchen work rarely needs a planning permit from Merri-bek City Council, though any extension or structural change is checked before we start.

Before You Start

Planning a Kitchen Renovation in Glenroy

  1. Layout

    Kitchen and Meals Room

Glenroy’s post-war houses usually have a kitchen with a small meals area, separated from the lounge by a wall and door. Removing that wall creates a family kitchen and living area, but the wall may be load-bearing and need a beam. We check the roof framing above before suggesting it.

  2. Storage

    Making a Corner Work

Where the kitchen stays compact, a corner layout makes the most of every metre. Our Glenroy kitchen project used a corner layout planned to maximise storage and bench space, with plenty of storage below the benches and natural timber open shelving above. Corner drawers or pull-out units stop the corner cupboard becoming dead space.

  3. Electrical

    Wiring From the 1950s

Many Glenroy homes still have wiring and switchboards from the 1950s or 1960s, with few power points in the kitchen. Induction cooktops, ovens and dishwashers may need new circuits. Our licensed electricians check the board first and provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety when the work is finished.

  4. Light

    The Window Over the Sink

The classic Glenroy kitchen has a window over the sink and no door to the yard. Replacing a window with sliding doors, or adding a servery window to a deck, brings in light and links the kitchen to the long backyard. In a brick veneer wall the new opening needs a lintel sized for the span.

  5. Asbestos

    Fibro Behind Old Splashbacks

Kitchens in post-war homes sometimes have fibro sheeting behind old tiles, around the stove or in the ceiling. We test suspect material before demolition, and if larger amounts contain asbestos a licensed removalist takes it out first. That keeps the job safe and avoids delays once the old cabinets are out.

  6. Design

    New Townhouse Kitchens

New townhouses in Glenroy often have a ground-floor kitchen open to the living area, with limited storage. Replacing basic cabinetry with taller pantries, more drawers and a better rangehood improves the space. If the townhouse is part of an owners corporation, we check the rules on external exhaust outlets before work starts.

FAQ

Kitchen Renovations Glenroy: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Do I need a permit to open up my Glenroy kitchen?

A planning permit from Merri-bek City Council is generally not needed for internal changes in Glenroy. Removing a load-bearing wall or adding a beam usually needs a building permit, which we arrange through a building surveyor. A rear extension may need a planning permit, depending on its size and the zone.

Can I see a kitchen you have renovated in Glenroy?

Yes. Our Glenroy kitchen project from 2025 is a compact kitchen with a corner layout, white cabinetry with plenty of storage below the benches, natural timber open shelving, warm timber benchtops and flooring, and a bold black and white geometric tile splashback. It also has an integrated stainless steel oven and dishwasher.

Are timber benchtops practical in a family kitchen?

They can be. Timber benchtops, like those in our Glenroy kitchen, add warmth and pair well with white cabinetry and timber floors. They need sealing or oiling and care around the sink. Stone or laminate needs less maintenance. We bring samples to your home so you can compare them in your own light.

How do we fit an island in a 1950s Glenroy kitchen?

It usually means removing the wall between the kitchen and meals area so there is room for an island and walkways around it. If the room is still narrow, a peninsula bench attached to one side can give similar bench space with less floor area. We draw the options to scale so you can compare them.

What should I fix in the kitchen before renting out my Glenroy house?

Victoria’s rental minimum standards say a kitchen needs a dedicated area for cooking and preparing food, a sink with hot and cold water, and a stovetop with two or more burners. In an original Glenroy kitchen, check that the cooktop, sink taps and hot water all work, and look at worn benchtops. New benchtops, doors and a cooktop can update an older kitchen quickly.
