Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom

“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”

Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful

“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”

Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”

Renovating Bathrooms in Donvale Homes

Donvale’s housing divides roughly along Springvale Road, with standard suburban blocks to the west and larger, treed lots of around an acre to the east, many of them built on in the 1970s and 1980s. These homes usually have a main bathroom, an ensuite and sometimes a powder room, but most are original or were updated decades ago. Coloured tiles, corner spa baths and small shower recesses are common.

Typical Donvale bathroom projects include removing corner spas for larger walk-in showers and freestanding baths, rebuilding ensuites with better layouts and storage, upgrading waterproofing and ventilation, and adding a guest bathroom or powder room. Most bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Manningham City Council, and our licensed plumbers and electricians provide compliance certificates for everything they install.

Before You Start

What to Plan For in a Donvale Bathroom

  1. Layout

    Taking Out the Corner Spa

Many Donvale ensuites from the 1980s were designed around a corner spa that now rarely gets used. Removing it usually frees enough floor for a generous walk-in shower, or a freestanding bath beside a separate shower. The spa pump, its power supply and the access panel all need to be removed and made safe, and we allow for that in the written quote.

  2. Plumbing

    Septic or Sewer Connection

Yarra Valley Water has extended sewerage to Donvale through its community sewerage program, but some properties east of Springvale Road may still drain to a septic system until they connect. Extra showers and toilets add load to a septic tank, so we confirm how your house drains before planning new fixtures or moving the ensuite.

  3. Waterproofing

    Upstairs Bathrooms in Split Levels

On sloping Donvale blocks, split level and double storey homes often have a bathroom above a rumpus room or garage. A slow leak there shows up as a stained ceiling below, so waterproofing to the Australian Standard and a correct fall to the floor waste get extra care. Pipes in a suspended floor also limit how far fixtures can move.

  4. Asbestos

    Asbestos Behind Old Tiles

Donvale homes built or renovated before 1990 can have asbestos cement sheeting behind wall tiles, in the ceiling or under old vinyl. Suspect material is identified before demolition, and larger amounts must be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist. Knowing early keeps the timeline realistic and the cost inside the written quote rather than a surprise later.

  5. Design

    A Powder Room for Guests

Larger Donvale homes with a formal lounge, a family room and a rumpus room often have no toilet near the entertaining areas. A powder room can sometimes fit under the stairs, in an old linen cupboard or beside the laundry. Where the existing waste pipes and vent run usually decides the best spot, so we check that first.

  6. Light

    Light Under Big Trees

Tall eucalypts and established gardens shade many homes on Donvale’s treed eastern blocks, and ensuites in the middle of the house can be dim even at midday. A skylight or roof window, pale large-format tiles and layered lighting all help. Where a new window would face a neighbour or the driveway, obscure glass keeps privacy without losing light.

FAQ

Bathroom Renovations Donvale: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Do I need a council permit to renovate a bathroom in Donvale?

Usually not. Replacing a bathroom within the existing walls generally needs neither a planning nor a building permit from Manningham City Council. A new window, a skylight or an extension can be different, particularly where a Bushfire Management Overlay or a Significant Landscape Overlay applies, which is more common on the larger eastern lots. We check your address before work starts.

Our Donvale home is still on a septic system. Can we add an ensuite?

Often, yes, but the septic system has to cope with the extra wastewater. Some older Donvale systems were sized for a smaller household, and changes to an onsite system may need a permit from Manningham City Council. If sewer is now available to your property, connecting may be the simpler path. We look at your drainage at the first visit.

Can you renovate two bathrooms in our Donvale house at once?

Yes. Doing the main bathroom and ensuite together shares setup, plumbing and tiling work. If the household needs a working shower throughout, we stage them so one room stays in use. Most single bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks, and we give you a timeline for each room before we start.

Is it worth updating the bathroom before we sell our Donvale home?

Donvale’s larger homes tend to draw families who expect a practical main bathroom and a usable ensuite, and an original 1980s room with a corner spa and coloured tiles stands out at inspections. A full rebuild isn’t always needed: fixing leaks, regrouting, and replacing tired vanities, tapware and lighting can make a clear difference. If the waterproofing has failed, it is better repaired properly than covered over.
