Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom

“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful

“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”

Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”

Renovating Bathrooms in Croydon Homes

Croydon grew quickly after the Second World War, and its 1960s and 70s brick veneer homes often have a single bathroom with coloured tiles, a shower over the bath and a separate toilet, while some later homes added a small ensuite. Older weatherboards may have bathrooms on timber floors, and units usually have compact bathrooms with basic fittings.

That shapes how we approach bathrooms in Croydon: rebuilding dated bathrooms from the frame with waterproofing to the Australian Standard, swapping baths for walk-in showers or adding a freestanding bath where there’s room, enlarging cramped ensuites, and improving ventilation and heating for cooler foothills winters. Most bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Maroondah City Council, and licensed trades handle all plumbing and electrical work.

Before You Start

What to Plan For in a Croydon Bathroom

  1. Materials

Coloured Tiles From the 1960s and 70s

Pink, green, blue and mustard tiles are still common in Croydon’s postwar brick veneer homes. Tiling over them hides problems and raises the floor, so we strip the room back to the frame, check for leaks and damaged timber, and install new waterproofing to the Australian Standard before any new tiles go on.

  2. Slope

    Split-Level and Sloping Homes

On Croydon’s sloping blocks, many homes are split-level or have rooms a few steps up or down. A bathroom on an upper level may sit over a garage or lower room, so waterproofing and drain falls need extra care. We check where the waste pipes run and how much fall there is before the layout is set.

  3. Heating

    Heating for Cooler Winters

Croydon sits at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges and winter mornings can be cold, especially in older homes with little insulation. Underfloor heating, a heated towel rail and a combined heat and exhaust unit make the room more comfortable. We plan power and switching for these during the design so nothing is added later as an afterthought.

  4. Floors

    Timber Floors in Older Weatherboards

Some of Croydon’s older weatherboard homes have bathrooms on timber floors over a ventilated sub-floor. After decades of small leaks, joists and bearers can be soft. Once the old floor is up we check the structure, repair what’s needed and use a floor system suited to tiling before the new waterproofing goes down.

  5. Apartments

    Units and Townhouses

Croydon has many units and newer townhouses, particularly close to the station, Main Street and Mt Dandenong Road. Where there is an owners corporation, we arrange approval, access and noise times, and take extra care with waterproofing and shared walls. A compact bathroom can still fit a walk-in shower and a good-sized vanity with careful planning.

FAQ

Bathroom Renovations Croydon: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Do I need a permit from Maroondah City Council to renovate my bathroom?

Internal bathroom work generally doesn’t need a planning permit in Croydon. A building permit is generally only needed if the work changes the structure, such as removing a load-bearing wall to make the bathroom bigger. We check what applies to your Croydon home before work starts and organise any permit needed.

Can you tile over our 1970s bathroom tiles?

We don’t recommend it. Tiling over old tiles doesn’t fix the waterproofing underneath, adds height to the floor and can hide existing leaks. In Croydon’s postwar homes we strip back to the frame, check for asbestos and damaged timber, and rebuild with new waterproofing so the bathroom lasts.

Is underfloor heating worth it in Croydon?

Many Croydon owners find it worthwhile because the foothills climate brings cold, damp mornings for much of the year. Electric underfloor heating under tiles warms the floor and helps the room dry. It works best with good ventilation and some insulation, which we look at during the renovation.

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

Most bathroom renovations take 2 to 4 weeks. Older Croydon homes can take a little longer if we find soft floor timbers, asbestos sheeting or old pipes that need replacing. We tell you as soon as we find anything, and your fixed-price quote spells out what is included.

What do tenants in Croydon expect from a bathroom?

Renters in Croydon’s family homes usually want a reliable shower, decent storage and a room free of mould. Many 1970s bathrooms here still have the original tiles, a shower over the bath and a single small window that fogs up in the cooler months. Before leasing, fixing leaks, cracked tiles, ventilation and worn tapware matters more than a full redesign. A plain, hard-wearing finish suits a rental and keeps maintenance down between tenancies.
