Kitchen and outdoor renovations

“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Outdoor Living in Heidelberg Homes

Many Heidelberg homes sit on sloping blocks with mature trees and views across parkland and the Yarra valley, the same landscape that drew the Heidelberg School painters. Older timber decks and verandahs are common and often need replacing, and owners want covered outdoor areas that make the most of the setting.

Common Heidelberg outdoor projects include elevated or multi level decks on sloping ground, pergolas and roofed areas that frame the view, replacement of old timber decks and stairs, and careful work around established trees. Decks often need a building permit, and vegetation or heritage controls can apply in parts of the suburb, so we confirm the requirements with Banyule City Council before we start.

Before You Start

Before You Build a Deck in Heidelberg

  1. Design

    Framing the Valley View

The Heidelberg School artists painted the Yarra flats from these hills, and the Heidelberg School Artists Trail still follows the river. On blocks that look over the valley, the deck’s position, height and balustrade decide how much of the view you keep. Glass or stainless wire balustrades interrupt the outlook far less than solid screens.

  2. Slope

    Multi-Level Decks

Where a Heidelberg block falls steeply, one large deck can end up very high. Splitting it into two or three levels with wide steps keeps each part closer to the ground, cuts down on bracing and balustrades, and links better to the garden. Any part more than 800 mm above the ground generally needs a building permit.

  3. Flooding

    Decks in Flood-Affected Areas

On lower ground near the Yarra flats or Salt Creek, a property may be in a flood overlay. A deck there may need to be designed so floodwater can pass underneath, with open sides and footings suited to saturated ground. We check the property’s overlays and any Melbourne Water requirements before the design is drawn.

  4. Structure

    Replacing Old Verandahs

Many of Heidelberg’s Victorian, Edwardian and interwar homes have timber verandahs or back decks that are decades old, with rotting posts and stumps sitting in wet soil. Replacing them with treated or galvanised framing on footings raised above the ground lasts longer. In the Warringal Village precinct, visible changes may need a planning permit.

  5. Shade

    Shade for Hilltop Decks

On Heidelberg’s exposed hilltops, decks facing north or west catch strong afternoon sun and wind. A pergola with adjustable louvres, a solid roof or shade sails between trees can make them usable on hot evenings. Roofed structures generally need a building permit, and posts and fixings are designed for the wind on an open site.

FAQ

Decks and Outdoor Living Heidelberg: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Do I need a permit for a deck in Heidelberg?

A deck more than 800 mm above the ground, or one with a roof attached to the house, generally needs a building permit. Parts of Heidelberg also have heritage, landscape or flood overlays that can require a planning permit or Melbourne Water input. We check what applies to your property before we start.

Can I build a deck around a large gum tree in my Heidelberg garden?

Often, yes. Footings are placed clear of the main roots, and the deck is cut around the trunk with room for growth. If the tree is protected under the Banyule Planning Scheme, even pruning may need a permit. We check this and plan the deck around the tree rather than the other way round.

What decking lasts best in Heidelberg’s shady, leafy gardens?

In damp, shady spots under big trees, boards that dry slowly can grow mould and turn slippery. Durable hardwoods such as spotted gum, or a quality composite board, with good airflow under the deck, last longer. Slightly wider board gaps help leaves and water clear, and a gentle fall stops water pooling on the surface.

Is it worth upgrading the outdoor area before I sell my Heidelberg home?

Outdoor space is a big part of living near Heidelberg’s parklands and river trails, so buyers tend to look at it closely. Fixing a sagging deck, replacing rotten boards, sanding and oiling, and making balustrades and steps safe are usually the first steps. A new pergola or deck takes longer, especially if a permit is needed, so allow time before you list.
