Kitchen and outdoor renovations

“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Renovating Kitchens in Macleod Homes

Macleod is a leafy, hilly suburb in Melbourne’s north-east, with postwar weatherboards, 1950s Housing Commission homes and 1960s brick houses, many backing onto bushland and reserves such as Gresswell Forest, along with the newer Springthorpe estate on former hospital land. Original kitchens are usually small rooms at the rear of the house, separated from the lounge and with limited bench space and storage. Some sit a few steps above the garden.

Common kitchen projects here are opening the kitchen to the living and dining area, adding a pantry and island bench, placing windows to make the most of garden and bush outlooks, and reconfiguring layouts that were built for a single cook. Most kitchen work doesn’t need a planning permit, though native vegetation and flood controls apply in some streets, so we check with Banyule City Council where an extension is planned.

Before You Start

Before You Renovate a Kitchen in Macleod

  1. Layout

    Small Rear Kitchens

Kitchens in Macleod’s postwar homes are often small rooms at the back, between the laundry and the lounge. Removing a wall to the dining area, or absorbing a small rear porch, can create space for an island or a longer bench. We check whether walls carry the roof and where the services come in.

  2. Light

    Framing the Bush Outlook

Many Macleod homes back onto reserves or bushy gardens. A wide window behind the sink, a window seat or glass doors to a deck make the most of the outlook, and where tall trees shade the kitchen, a skylight helps. We place windows to balance the view, privacy and afternoon sun.

  3. Structure

    Re-Levelling Old Floors

Older Macleod weatherboards on stumps can have sloping or springy floors, which makes new cabinets and benchtops hard to install level. Restumping or packing the floor before the kitchen goes in avoids gaps and cracked benchtops later. We check floor levels at the first visit.

  4. Electrical

    Switchboard and Circuits

Postwar Macleod homes may have an old switchboard with fuses and limited capacity. Induction cooktops, wall ovens and dishwashers need dedicated circuits and modern safety switches on every circuit. We assess the board at the first visit and include any upgrade needed in the fixed-price written quote.

  5. Storage

    Pantry Without Extending

In a compact Macleod kitchen, a corner pantry, tall pull-outs beside the fridge and drawers instead of base cupboards make the most of every wall. If the laundry is next to the kitchen, part of it can sometimes become a walk-in pantry. We plan storage around what you keep.

FAQ

Kitchen Renovations Macleod: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Will I need a permit to renovate my kitchen in Macleod?

Not usually for internal work. A planning permit may be needed if the project includes an extension or works near protected native vegetation, which Banyule’s Environmental Significance Overlay covers in parts of Macleod. Taking out a load-bearing wall also needs a building permit. We check your property’s controls first.

Can we open our Macleod kitchen to the living room?

Usually. The wall between the kitchen and lounge in a postwar Macleod home may support the ceiling or roof, so a beam designed by an engineer may be needed. On timber floors, the stumps under new point loads may also need upgrading. We assess this before confirming the design.

Our Macleod kitchen is a step up from the garden. Can we link it to a deck?

Yes. Replacing a window with sliding doors and adding a deck at floor level gives a level step outside. On Macleod’s sloping blocks the deck may end up more than 800 mm above the ground, in which case it generally needs a building permit and balustrades. We plan the kitchen and deck together.

How long will a Macleod kitchen renovation take?

A kitchen replaced in the same position is one of the faster renovations once the cabinets are made. Restumping, removing walls or adding doors to a deck lengthen the job. We give you a written timeline and help plan a temporary kitchen if needed.

Is it worth updating the kitchen before selling a Macleod house?

The kitchen is one of the rooms people notice first. In an original Macleod kitchen, replacing a worn benchtop, painting or re-facing cupboard doors, and adding a new splashback, tapware and appliances can make it feel fresh without a full renovation. Fix any leaks under the sink and sagging floors too, as inspectors will find them.
