Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Craigieburn Homes
Craigieburn’s estate homes typically have a main bathroom, an ensuite off the main bedroom and a separate toilet, built quickly and finished with basic fittings. After years of daily use, shower screens, grout and silicone often show wear. The older 1970s and 80s homes near the station and the original township usually have one bathroom with original tiles.
That shapes most of our Craigieburn bathroom renovations: rebuilding leaking showers with proper waterproofing, upgrading small ensuites with larger showers and better vanities, replacing builder-grade fittings with longer lasting ones, and modernising older original bathrooms. Most bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Hume City Council, but plumbing, electrical and waterproofing are carried out by licensed trades with compliance certificates.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Craigieburn
Estates
Two Very Different Housing Eras
Craigieburn’s first big subdivision was promoted in 1972, so the streets around the station and the old township hold 1970s and 80s brick homes with one family bathroom. The estates west and north, such as Highlands, were built from the 2000s with an ensuite and a separate toilet. We plan the scope around which of these you have, because the problems differ.
Waterproofing
Leaking Showers in Estate Ensuites
In many Craigieburn estate homes the ensuite shower was built with a preformed base, a framed screen and minimal tiling. After ten or fifteen years the silicone and grout fail and water gets into the wall frame or the bedroom carpet. We strip back to the frame and slab and apply new waterproofing to the Australian Standard before any tiles go down.
Warranty
Builder’s Warranty on Newer Homes
If your home in one of the newer estates is still within its builder’s warranty period, a shower that leaks from day one may be the original builder’s responsibility. It is worth raising a defect claim before you pull the bathroom out, because once the work is replaced the evidence is gone. We are happy to look first and tell you what we see.
Asbestos
Asbestos in 1970s and 80s Bathrooms
Homes from Craigieburn’s first growth period were built before 1990 and can have asbestos cement sheeting behind wall tiles, in the ceiling or around the old bath. Suspect material is checked before demolition, and larger amounts must be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist. Allowing for this at quote stage keeps your fixed price fixed.
Drainage
Slab Floors and Fixed Drains
Almost every Craigieburn home sits on a concrete slab, so the toilet and floor waste are cast in place. Moving them means cutting the slab, which is possible but adds cost and time. Keeping the toilet where it is and moving the shower within the same wet zone is often the better value, and we show you both options at the measure.
Ventilation
Ventilation and Mould
Many estate ensuites have no window and a small ceiling fan that vents into the roof space. In Craigieburn’s cold winters that moisture condenses and mould appears on the ceiling. We fit a properly sized exhaust fan ducted to the outside, so steam leaves the house instead of soaking the insulation above.

Do I need council approval to renovate a bathroom in Craigieburn?
Usually not. Internal bathroom work generally needs no planning permit from Hume City Council, and a building permit is normally only needed if the work changes the structure. We confirm this for your address before work starts, and our licensed plumbers and electricians provide a plumbing compliance certificate and a Certificate of Electrical Safety when the job is done.
Our estate home is only ten years old. Why does the ensuite already leak?
It is common in homes built to a tight budget. Thin silicone joints, a preformed shower base and waterproofing that stopped short of the wall corners all fail over time. We remove the old shower completely, waterproof the floor and walls to the Australian Standard, and rebuild it with a tiled or quality base and a better screen.
Can I turn the separate toilet and bathroom into one bigger room?
Often, yes. Many Craigieburn estate homes have a narrow toilet beside the main bathroom, and removing the dividing wall can create room for a larger shower or a full-size vanity. We check whether the wall is load bearing and where the drains run in the slab before recommending it.
How long will a Craigieburn bathroom renovation take?
Allow 2 to 4 weeks for most bathroom renovations. Estate homes with an ensuite and a main bathroom can be staged so one stays usable while we work on the other. Older 1970s and 80s homes can take a little longer if we find asbestos or old pipes that need replacing.
Is it worth renovating the bathroom before selling or leasing my Craigieburn home?
Craigieburn’s older 1970s and 1980s brick homes near the station often have original bathrooms with a shower over a bath and coloured tiles, while many estate homes from the 2000s have bathrooms that are simply worn. Renters and first home buyers want a clean, working room rather than a showpiece. Replacing failed silicone, leaking shower bases and tired vanities often does more than a full rebuild. Victoria’s rental minimum standards require a washbasin, a shower or bath, and hot and cold water.
