Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Hurstbridge Homes
Hurstbridge homes range from Edwardian weatherboards near the township to houses built between the 1960s and 1980s, so original bathrooms with earthy tiles, small showers and timber vanities are common. Mud brick and timber homes bring their own challenges, with uneven walls and floors that need careful waterproofing. Properties outside the township may rely on tank water or a septic system, which affects how plumbing is planned.
Common Hurstbridge bathroom projects include replacing dated bathrooms and ensuites, waterproofing properly against mud brick, stone and timber, adding walk-in showers and better ventilation, and planning plumbing around tank water and septic systems. Most interior bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Nillumbik Shire Council, and we check site access, water supply and waste systems carefully before we start.

Before You Start
What to Plan For in a Hurstbridge Bathroom
Floors
Bathrooms in Old Weatherboards
In Hurstbridge’s early 1900s weatherboards the bathroom was often added later, in a rear lean-to or enclosed verandah with a timber floor on stumps. Before tiling, the floor framing is checked for rot and levelled, and a compressed sheet or similar substrate is laid so the waterproofing has a stable base. Old galvanised pipes are usually replaced at the same time.
Plumbing
Tank Water and Pressure
Hurstbridge properties on tank water depend on a pump for shower pressure, and the hot water service needs to suit that supply. A new bathroom is a chance to check the pump, add a pressure tank or filter, and choose mixers that work well at the available pressure. We test pressure at the first visit before choosing fittings.
Drainage
Septic Load From New Fixtures
Where a Hurstbridge property drains to a septic system, a second bathroom, a larger shower or a bath adds to the load on the tank and the absorption area. Changes to an onsite system may need a Nillumbik Shire Council permit. Water-efficient tapware and dual flush toilets help, and we confirm the system before adding fixtures.
Waterproofing
Waterproofing Mud Brick Walls
Mud brick walls absorb water and can soften if a shower leaks into them. In Hurstbridge’s mud brick houses, shower walls are lined with a suitable backing board or sealed to the Australian Standard, with careful detailing where tiles meet the exposed brick. The aim is to keep the character without risking the wall.
Heating
Cold Rooms and Heating
Bathrooms in older Hurstbridge homes are often on the cold side of the house with little insulation. Insulating walls and ceiling while they are open, adding floor heating or a ceiling heater and a ducted exhaust fan make the room more comfortable and help stop mould on timber linings. We plan the circuits with our licensed electricians.

Do I need a permit to renovate a bathroom in a Hurstbridge heritage house?
A number of early 1900s buildings in central Hurstbridge are in the Heritage Overlay. Heritage controls mostly cover external changes, so a bathroom renovated inside the house usually doesn’t need a planning permit, but a new window, skylight or extension may. We check your property’s overlays with Nillumbik Shire Council first.
Will a new bathroom work with tank water in Hurstbridge?
Yes. Most modern mixers and showers work on tank water if the pump delivers steady pressure. We check the pump, pressure tank and filters, and make sure the hot water service suits tank supply. Some owners add a filter to the basin tap. Our licensed plumbers issue a compliance certificate for all work.
How do you get materials into a Hurstbridge property on a steep or long driveway?
We look at access at the first visit: driveway grade, turning room, low branches and where a skip bin can sit. Smaller deliveries, a mini skip or a trailer may be needed on tight sites. Planning this early keeps the bathroom on its 2 to 4 week schedule rather than waiting on access.
Should we renovate the bathroom before selling our Hurstbridge home?
Hurstbridge buyers are often drawn to character, so a period or mud brick bathroom doesn’t have to be stripped out. What matters is that it is dry, sound and works: no leaks, soft floors or mould. Fixing these, regrouting and updating tapware and lighting are good first steps. Have the tank pump and any septic system checked too, as buyers often ask.
