Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Mernda Homes
Most Mernda houses were built from the early 2000s onwards in estates such as Mernda Villages, Woodland Waters and Hawkstowe, so bathrooms are rarely old. The usual layout is a main bathroom, an ensuite off the main bedroom and a separate toilet, all on a concrete slab, with standard showers, a single vanity and builder-range tiles that owners are ready to move on from.
Typical bathroom projects here include turning a cramped ensuite into a walk-in shower with a double vanity, retiling the main bathroom, adding recessed niches and tall storage, and repairing showers that have started to leak within their first decade or two. Interior bathroom work rarely needs a planning permit from the City of Whittlesea, and our licensed plumbers and electricians certify their work.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Mernda
Waterproofing
Leaks in Young Showers
A leaking shower in a Mernda home built only fifteen years ago is more common than owners expect, often from a failed membrane at the hob or floor waste rather than the tiles themselves. Stained skirting on the other side of the wall and drummy tiles are early signs. We strip back to the slab, install a new membrane to the Australian Standard and retile.
Warranty
Builder Warranty on Newer Homes
If your Mernda home is still within the builder’s statutory warranty period, a defect such as a leaking shower may be the original builder’s responsibility to fix. Check your building contract and handover documents before paying for repairs. Once that period has passed, or when you want an upgrade rather than a defect repair, we quote the full job in writing.
Layout
Stretching a Narrow Ensuite
Many Mernda ensuites were designed as a narrow strip with a shower at one end and a single vanity squeezed in beside the toilet. Taking in part of the walk-in robe, or swapping the shower and vanity positions, can make room for a double basin and a frameless screen. Moving a toilet on a slab means cutting the concrete, which we allow for in the quote.
Ventilation
Exhaust Fans That Actually Vent
Some estate homes have exhaust fans that discharge into the roof space rather than outside, and upstairs bathrooms in double-storey Mernda homes can hold steam for hours. Ducting the fan out through the eaves or roof, and choosing one sized for the room, helps protect ceilings and grout from mould. Our electricians fit it and issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Access
Working on the Upper Floor
In a double-storey Mernda home the main bathroom and ensuite are often upstairs, with a staircase, a landing and near-new carpet between the front door and the work. Tiles, a bath and the old fittings all travel up and down that route. We cover stairs and floors, contain the dust to the bathroom and clean up at the end of each day.

Do I need council approval to renovate a bathroom in Mernda?
Usually not for internal work. Replacing a shower, vanity and tiles inside an existing Mernda home generally needs no planning permit from the City of Whittlesea, and estate design guidelines usually cover the outside of the house rather than its bathrooms. Plumbing and electrical work must still be carried out by licensed trades, and we provide the compliance certificates.
Can you add an extra bathroom to my Mernda home?
Often, yes. A study, a spare bedroom beside the main bedroom or part of a large walk-in robe can become an ensuite or a second bathroom. On a concrete slab the new drains are cut into the floor, so we check where the sewer runs and how much fall is available before you commit to a layout.
How long will our Mernda bathroom be out of action?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the size and what we find once the old tiles are off. Because most Mernda homes have a second bathroom or an ensuite, families usually keep living at home and share the other shower while we work. We give you a written schedule before starting.
We are selling our Mernda house soon. Should we redo the bathroom first?
Buyers in Mernda often inspect several homes of a similar age and layout, so a tired or leaking bathroom stands out by comparison. Fixing leaks, regrouting or retiling worn areas, replacing a dated vanity and tapware, and making sure the exhaust fan works can be enough. A full redesign suits owners who plan to stay long enough to enjoy it.
Should we keep the bath in a Mernda family bathroom?
With young children, many families keep a bath in the main bathroom and put the larger walk-in shower in the ensuite. If you do remove it, a wider shower with a niche and a hand shower can fill the space well. On a slab, the existing bath waste can often be adapted for the new shower drain, which we confirm on site.
