Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom

“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful

“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”

Wow! Now that's a bathroom

“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”

Renovating Bathrooms in Newport Homes

Newport’s weatherboard homes and cottages usually have a single bathroom at the back of the house, often in a lean-to or enclosed verandah, with a timber floor and old pipework. Some still have an outside toilet, and newer townhouses have compact bathrooms on two levels. Ventilation is usually poor in older rooms.

Newport bathroom projects often mean rebuilding rear bathrooms with new framing, insulation and waterproofing, bringing the toilet inside, adding a skylight for natural light, improving exhaust ventilation and updating townhouse bathrooms. Most internal bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Hobsons Bay City Council, and every plumbing and electrical change is done by licensed trades.

Before You Start

Planning a Bathroom in Newport

  1. Structure

    The Enclosed Back Verandah

In parts of Newport’s older housing, the bathroom sits in what was once an open back verandah, closed in with thin walls and a low skillion roof. These rooms are often cold, poorly framed and hard to waterproof. Rebuilding the walls and floor properly, with insulation and a sound roof, gives the new bathroom a solid base.

  2. Layout

    Bringing the Toilet Inside

A few Newport homes still have a toilet outside the back door or off the laundry. Bringing it inside usually means finding room within the bathroom or a new rear extension and connecting to the sewer with enough fall. We check where the drains run on your block before suggesting the layout.

  3. Asbestos

    Postwar Homes in West Newport

The West Newport Estate was built by the Housing Commission between 1945 and 1960, and homes of that era, like others built before 1990, may contain asbestos in wall linings, eaves or old bathroom sheeting. We arrange testing before demolition, and larger amounts are removed by a licensed asbestos removalist before our trades start.

  4. Ventilation

    Steam in Windowless Rooms

Many older Newport bathrooms have only a small high window and no exhaust fan, so steam settles on the ceiling and mould follows. A fan ducted outside through the roof or wall, ideally on a timer, clears moisture after each shower. We size the fan to the room and choose a discreet outlet.

  5. Plumbing

    Two-Level Townhouse Bathrooms

Newport townhouses often have a bathroom upstairs and a powder room below, with pipes running through floors and ceilings. Replacing fixtures upstairs can mean access from the ceiling below to reach wastes and supply lines. We plan this upfront so ceilings are opened and patched once, not several times.

FAQ

Bathroom Renovations Newport: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Does my Newport bathroom renovation need council approval?

Most internal bathroom work does not need a planning permit from Hobsons Bay City Council, even in a heritage area, because the overlay mainly controls the outside of the house. A new window, roof vent or extension visible from the street may need one. Plumbing and electrical work is completed by licensed trades with compliance certificates.

Can a cold rear bathroom in a Newport weatherboard be made warmer?

Yes. With the linings off, we can insulate the walls, ceiling and floor, seal draughts around windows and doors, and add a heated towel rail or ceiling heater. Replacing an old window with a well sealed unit helps too. These changes make a big difference in rear bathrooms built on thin enclosed verandahs.

How long does a Newport bathroom renovation take?

Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. Extra time may be needed if the floor framing is rotten, if asbestos needs removing, or if the toilet is moving inside. We give you a written schedule and keep the work area contained, so the rest of the house can be used.

What should we fix in the bathroom before selling or renting our Newport home?

A rear bathroom with a soft floor, leaking shower or mouldy ceiling is something buyers and tenants notice quickly in Newport’s older weatherboards. Fixing leaks, adding an exhaust fan, regrouting or retiling the shower and fitting a new vanity often present the room well. A full rebuild suits owners planning to stay.
