Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Yarraville Homes
Bathrooms in Yarraville’s weatherboards and cottages are often in the rear lean-to, with timber floors, old tiles and a single bathroom for the household. Many have ageing waterproofing and limited space, while townhouses in the area have compact bathrooms and ensuites. Some homes also have an outdoor toilet or bathroom that was once part of a back porch.
Typical Yarraville bathroom work includes stripping back and repairing subfloors, waterproofing properly, adding an ensuite or second bathroom during rear renovations, and fitting walk-in showers and period-appropriate finishes, along with new pipes and better exhaust to keep moisture down. The City of Maribyrnong rarely needs to approve an internal bathroom renovation, so the focus is on licensed plumbers and electricians, certified waterproofing and, in apartments, your owners corporation.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Yarraville
Design
Bungalow Bathrooms in the Angliss Estate
The interwar bungalows of Yarraville’s Angliss Housing Estate heritage area, around streets such as Tuppen, Sturt and Austin Streets, were generally built with an indoor bathroom. Some still have original wall tiles, a bath under the window and a separate toilet. Hex floor tiles, subway wall tiles and a pedestal or console basin can update the room while suiting the house.
Floors
Damp Under Weatherboard Floors
Yarraville’s Victorian and Edwardian weatherboards usually sit on stumps with a shallow crawl space. Blocked subfloor vents and garden beds built up against the walls can keep it damp, which rots joists under the bathroom. We check ventilation and the framing when the floor comes up, and fix the cause rather than just the boards.
Plumbing
Old Pipes and Low Pressure
Older Yarraville homes can still have galvanised steel water pipes that have corroded inside, giving weak flow at the shower and discoloured water. A bathroom renovation is a good time to replace the supply from the meter or at least the branch to the bathroom. Our licensed plumbers do this and issue a compliance certificate.
Waterproofing
Leaks in Upstairs Townhouse Bathrooms
Many newer Yarraville townhouses have the main bathroom or ensuite upstairs above the living area, so a failed shower membrane often shows up as stains on the ceiling below. Fixing it usually means removing the tiles, rebuilding the shower and waterproofing to the Australian Standard. We also check the ceiling below for damage.
Light
Daylight Through the Roof
A bathroom in the middle of a Yarraville cottage may have no outside wall at all. A skylight or roof window brings in daylight, and a model with an opening vent helps clear steam. On the rear slope of the roof it usually cannot be seen from the street, which matters in Yarraville’s heritage areas.

My Yarraville home is in a heritage area. Can I still renovate the bathroom?
Yes. The Heritage Overlays covering parts of Yarraville mainly control the outside of the house, so new fixtures, tiles and a new layout inside an existing bathroom generally do not need a planning permit. Changes that can be seen from the street, such as a new window, may. We check your property before work starts.
Can we fit a walk-in shower in a small Yarraville bathroom?
Often, yes. Replacing an old bath with a level or low-hob shower and a fixed glass panel can make a small bathroom feel larger. Over a timber floor, the floor framing may need to be lowered or rebuilt to get the right fall to the waste. We check the subfloor before confirming the design.
Our upstairs ensuite is leaking into the room below. What is involved?
This is common in Yarraville townhouses with upstairs ensuites. In most cases the shower needs to come out completely so the membrane and shower base can be replaced, as patching grout rarely solves a membrane failure. We investigate the source first, then rebuild and waterproof the shower to the Australian Standard. If the townhouse has an owners corporation, we coordinate any approvals needed for the work.
Should we redo the bathroom before selling our Yarraville house?
Yarraville buyers often compare several renovated period homes, and a dated rear bathroom with a soft floor or mouldy ceiling can stand out. Fixing leaks, regrouting, new tapware and a fresh vanity often lift the room enough for a sale. A full rebuild makes more sense when you plan to stay and enjoy it yourself.
