Kitchen and outdoor renovations

“Fantastic service and fantastic price. We had our outdoor area fully tiled and our kitchen renovated. They talked me through the process step by step, did what they promised in the time they promised, were always on time and so very friendly. They even went out of their way with additional extras, running around Melbourne buying everything I needed to take the pressure off me. Would recommend you give them a try. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable, and nothing was too big for them to do. Father and son service, fantastic team.”

Renovating Kitchens in Reservoir Homes

Reservoir is Darebin’s most populous suburb, built mostly in the decades after the Second World War, with weatherboard and brick veneer homes on suburban blocks and a steady stream of townhouses and units replacing older houses. Kitchens in the original homes are small and enclosed, with a meals nook, a window over the sink and laminate or timber cabinetry that has often been patched up over the years.

Common Reservoir kitchen work includes removing walls to link the kitchen to the living and dining rooms, replacing old cabinetry with practical storage and a pantry, upgrading wiring, switchboards and plumbing that date back to the original build, and adding doors that open to the backyard. Our Reservoir kitchen project took a period approach instead. Most interior kitchen work doesn’t need a planning permit from Darebin City Council, and we handle the trade compliance.

Before You Start

What to Plan For in a Reservoir Kitchen

  1. Layout

    Meals Nook to Open Plan

The typical Reservoir post-war kitchen opens to a small meals nook, with the lounge behind a wall. Removing that wall creates one room for cooking, eating and living, which suits most families. If the wall carries ceiling joists or roof loads, a beam is needed. We check from the roof space and allow for it in the quote.

  2. Design

    A Period Kitchen in Reservoir

Our Reservoir kitchen renovation, completed in 2023, shows a different approach for a period home: solid dark timber cabinetry, a black quartz benchtop, a brick-pattern splashback, a built-in pantry and an external bar bench with corbel brackets. It suits owners who want a kitchen that matches the character of an older house.

  3. Electrical

    Original Switchboards

Reservoir homes built in the 1950s and 1960s often still have the original switchboard with ceramic fuses and only a few circuits. A new kitchen with modern appliances usually needs a switchboard upgrade and safety switches. We include this in the fixed-price quote, and our licensed electricians provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

  4. Storage

    Storage for Busy Households

Original Reservoir kitchens rarely have a pantry or enough drawers. Pot drawers, a tall pantry unit, a concealed bin cupboard and corner solutions make far more of the same floor area. Where the old meals area becomes part of the kitchen, a wall of tall cabinets can hold the fridge, pantry and oven together.

  5. Materials

    Kitchens in Newer Units

Townhouses and units built across Reservoir in recent decades often have kitchens with laminate benchtops and basic cabinets that wear quickly. Replacing doors, benchtops, splashback and appliances, while keeping the layout and plumbing, can refresh them without major disruption. If the property has an owners corporation, we check whether approval is needed.

FAQ

Kitchen Renovations Reservoir: Your Questions

Ask Us Anything
Can I see a kitchen you have renovated in Reservoir?

Yes. The Reservoir kitchen renovation on our projects page, completed in 2023, has solid dark timber cabinetry, a black reconstituted quartz benchtop, pot drawers, a concealed bin cupboard, a built-in pantry and a bar bench with corbel brackets. It was designed to suit a period home and shows how storage can be built in without crowding the room.

Can we open our 1950s Reservoir kitchen to the backyard?

Usually, yes. Many Reservoir kitchens sit at the back of the house with a window over the sink facing the yard. Replacing that window or a nearby wall with sliding doors needs a lintel or beam, and a building permit if it is structural. We check the wall and the ground level outside first.

How do we manage at home without a kitchen?

Many Reservoir owners set up a temporary kitchen in the laundry or meals area, with a microwave, kettle, fridge and a portable cooktop. The work area is sealed off while we work and cleaned up as we go. Your written schedule shows how many days the kitchen will be out of action.

What does a Reservoir rental kitchen need before new tenants move in?

Victoria’s rental minimum standards require a dedicated area for cooking and preparing food, a sink with hot and cold water and a stovetop with two or more burners. In older Reservoir houses, also check that the oven and rangehood work and the wiring is safe. If you plan to sell instead, replacing tired doors and benchtops is often enough.
