Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Elwood Homes
Many of Elwood’s art deco and interwar flats still have their original small bathrooms, with pastel or black and white tiles, a bath under the shower and an awkward layout. The bungalows and Edwardian houses nearby usually have a single family bathroom, and the coastal air and age of these buildings mean ventilation and waterproofing are often overdue for attention.
Bathroom work in Elwood often involves modernising compact flat bathrooms while respecting their period character, replacing a shower over bath with a walk-in shower, adding an ensuite to family homes, and fixing poor ventilation that leads to mould near the coast. Most interior bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from the City of Port Phillip, but in flats we work closely with your owners corporation on access, noise and approvals.

What to Plan For in an Elwood Bathroom
Heritage
Art Deco Character in Walk-Up Flats
Elwood is known for its interwar walk-up flats, in styles from Spanish Mission to Streamline Moderne. Original bathrooms in these blocks may still have period tiles, chrome fittings or terrazzo. A new bathroom can reuse colours, tile shapes and rounded details from the era while adding modern waterproofing, fixtures and lighting.
Ventilation
Damp Air Near the Bay
Elwood’s sea air and low lying streets mean bathrooms with poor exhaust stay damp for longer. Mould on ceilings and grout is common in older flats where the only ventilation is a small window. A properly sized exhaust fan ducted outside, plus a heated towel rail or ceiling heater, keeps the room noticeably drier.
Flooding
Ground Floor Bathrooms in Flood Areas
Parts of Elwood are in the Special Building Overlay because they can be inundated by overland flows. For a ground floor bathroom there, keeping power points and switches higher on the wall and choosing tiles over timber or vinyl reduce damage if water does get in. A new bathroom in an extension may need Melbourne Water input.
Waterproofing
Stacked Bathrooms in Walk-Ups
Elwood’s two and three storey walk-ups often have bathrooms stacked directly above each other. A failing shower in an upper flat soon shows up as stains in the ceiling below and can become an owners corporation matter. Waterproofing to the Australian Standard, correct falls to the waste and a well sealed shower screen are what stop it.
Design
Ensuites in Bungalows
Elwood’s Californian bungalows were usually built with one bathroom off the central hallway. An ensuite can often be added by reworking a large front bedroom, an enclosed side verandah or part of a rear addition, with plumbing run under the timber floor. We look under the floor at the first visit to see where waste pipes can reach.

Is my Elwood flat bathroom affected by heritage controls?
Large parts of Elwood are covered by City of Port Phillip heritage overlays, including HO7 and the precinct around Glen Huntly and Ormond Roads (HO8). These generally control external changes, so the inside of a bathroom is rarely affected. A new window or an exhaust vent on a wall seen from the street may need a planning permit.
How do you manage noise and access in an Elwood block of flats?
Most Elwood walk-ups have shared stairs, no lift and neighbours close by. We agree work hours with the owners corporation, notify residents where required, protect stair treads and walls, and remove rubbish each day. The noisiest work, such as tile removal, is grouped into as few days as practical.
Will my bathroom take longer in an older Elwood flat?
Most bathrooms take 2 to 4 weeks. Older Elwood flats can add time if galvanised pipes, cracked floor screeds or water damaged framing are found behind the tiles, and owners corporation approval needs to be in place before work begins. We let you know about anything we find straight away.
Can you fit a walk-in shower in my Elwood bathroom?
Usually, if you remove a bath with a shower over it, which is common in Elwood’s interwar flats and bungalows. A walk-in shower needs a proper fall to the waste, and in a flat with a concrete floor that takes careful planning. Frameless glass and a wall-hung vanity help a small room feel larger.
What bathroom work should I do before putting my Elwood flat on the market?
Elwood buyers often look for period character, so a bathroom that keeps some deco feel but is clean, dry and working well tends to suit. Treating mould, improving the exhaust, regrouting and fixing a leaking shower usually come first. A full renovation in a flat needs owners corporation approval, so allow time before your campaign starts.
