Powder room & laundry into a small bathroom
“We are delighted with our new bathroom. Tony made the entire process very easy for us, which is what you want when renovating. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very patient with all our questions and provided great advice on the design and installation. The workmanship was of high quality and the quote was highly competitive. Highly recommend Tony and his team!”
Bathroom renovations: stressless and wonderful
“Thank you, Tony and your team, for a stressless and wonderful bathroom renovation. Our 4-year-old townhouse bathroom and ensuite showers had serious leakage issues, with water leaking into the walls and between floors. The builder was happy to silicone the problem as a solution. The only options were to replace the showers, or a full renovation for both rooms. We chose the latter. Tony provided a competitive quote. Despite the inevitable out-of-square bathroom issues, the job was completed without stress, on-time and in budget, and the finish was fabulous. And square. We are now looking at a kitchen update. Tony, find some time. Highly recommend Tony and the team.”
Wow! Now that's a bathroom
“In such difficult times we were so grateful that we picked Tony and his crew to renovate our bathroom. His knowledge of the industry and his attention to detail is second to none. Tony was always easy to contact and happy to discuss any issues. The standard of workmanship was outstanding. We love our new bathroom!”
Renovating Bathrooms in Elsternwick Homes
Many Elsternwick villas and Federation homes still rely on one main bathroom, sometimes a converted sleep-out or an old rear addition with tired tiling and uneven timber floors underneath. The art deco and postwar flats around the village often keep small original bathrooms with a shower over the bath, while apartments built more recently have ensuites that are starting to show their age.
Owners here often ask for an ensuite added to a period home, old bathrooms rebuilt with proper waterproofing over timber subfloors, character details such as tessellated or patterned tiles kept where they suit, and small flat bathrooms made to work harder. Most interior bathroom work doesn’t need a planning permit from Glen Eira City Council, but in flats and apartments we work with your owners corporation on access and approvals.

Before You Start
Before You Renovate a Bathroom in Elsternwick
Layout
Sleep-Out Conversions
Some Elsternwick villas have a bathroom in a converted sleep-out or enclosed back verandah, with a lightweight wall, a sloping ceiling and a floor that drops towards the garden. These rooms often need new framing, insulation and a level floor before tiling. We check the structure and roof at the first visit so the quote covers what is needed.
Apartments
Interwar Maisonettes and Flats
Elsternwick has many interwar maisonettes and low-rise flats, some with original bathrooms featuring coloured wall tiles and small windows. Owners corporation approval is needed for waterproofing and plumbing changes, and work hours may be limited. We plan access up common stairs and protection of shared areas before the start date.
Heritage
Glen Eira Heritage Precincts
Parts of Elsternwick are in Glen Eira’s heritage overlays, including the Elsternwick Estate and Environs precinct and the Gladstone Parade precinct. These mostly control external changes, so a bathroom renovation inside the house rarely needs a planning permit. A new window, a vent through the facade or a skylight seen from the street may, so we check first.
Design
Ensuites in Federation Homes
Federation homes in Elsternwick usually have generous bedrooms off a central hall but only one bathroom. An ensuite can often fit into part of a large bedroom or an adjoining sunroom. Running pipes through a timber floor is usually manageable if there is a good fall to the sewer. We check the subfloor height and access before suggesting a position.
Asbestos
Postwar Updates and Asbestos
Bathrooms updated between the 1950s and 1980s, common in Elsternwick flats and in period homes renovated in that era, can have asbestos cement sheeting behind tiles or in ceilings. Suspect material is tested before demolition, and larger quantities have to be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist. We include this in the written quote.
Waterproofing
Character Tiles Over a New Membrane
Some Elsternwick owners want to keep or recreate patterned floor tiles or hexagonal mosaics. Original floor tiles can rarely be kept when the floor needs a new membrane to the Australian Standard, but reproduction patterned and mosaic tiles suit period homes well. Whatever the style, the waterproofing beneath is done properly.

Bathroom Renovations In and Around Elsternwick
Elsternwick (3185) is about 9 km south-east of the Melbourne CBD, and well within our regular service area. We renovate bathrooms in Elsternwick and its neighbouring suburbs, with the same team, the same fixed pricing and the same attention to detail.
Bathroom Renovations MelbourneIs my Elsternwick home in Glen Eira or another council?
Elsternwick itself is in Glen Eira City Council. Addresses just across Hotham Street are in Ripponlea, in the City of Port Phillip, and across the Nepean Highway you are in Bayside. Your rates notice or VicPlan confirms the council. Bathroom work inside the house usually doesn’t need a planning permit either way.
Can you keep the period feel in my Elsternwick villa bathroom?
Yes. Subway or hexagonal tiles, a freestanding bath, a pedestal or console basin and cross-handle tapware suit Victorian and Edwardian homes, and keeping the cornice and high ceiling adds character. Modern waterproofing, a frameless shower and good ventilation sit behind the period look. We help you choose fittings that suit the age of the house.
How long will my Elsternwick bathroom renovation take?
Plan on 2 to 4 weeks for most bathrooms. A sleep-out bathroom that needs new framing, or a flat where the owners corporation limits work hours, can take longer. We give you a written timeline with the fixed price quote and let you know straight away if something found on site changes it.
Is updating the bathroom worth it before selling my Elsternwick flat?
Buyers of Elsternwick’s interwar and postwar flats often like original character but are put off by leaks, mould and cracked tiles. Fixing the shower, regrouting, improving the exhaust and replacing a worn vanity may be enough. A full renovation in a flat needs owners corporation approval, so allow time for that before the sale campaign starts.
